Brussels – Changes coming for EU fire-fighting systems. The European Commission has adopted new measures restricting the use of PFAS (perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances) in foams<\/strong> used for fire extinguishing, under the REACH regulation<\/a><\/span>, the EU chemicals legislation. <\/span><\/span><\/span>The restriction marks “an important step” towards the Commission’s goal of minimising PFAS emissions, <\/span>the EU executive emphasises. With <\/span>these restrictions, it estimates cutting the emissions and production of about 470 tonnes of this type of chemical<\/strong>, along <\/span><\/span>with the associated risks to the environment, soil, and water.<\/span><\/p>\n

This restriction will formally take effect 20 days after publication in the Official Journal<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span> It will enter into force after a transition period of between 12 months and 10 years, depending on use, allowing for replacement by safer and more effective alternatives.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
