The list of five films left to compete for the award includes <strong>Christy<\/strong> by US director Brendan Canty, <strong>Deaf<\/strong> by Spanish director Eva Libertad, <strong>It Was Just An Accident<\/strong> by Iranian director Jafar Panahi, <strong>Love Me Tender<\/strong> by French director Anna Cazenave Cambet and, finally, <strong>Sentimental Value<\/strong> by Danish director Joachim Trier. The Italians are left to watch: only in 2012 did Andrea Segre manage to win with his <strong>I am Li.<\/strong>.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-2 [&amp;+p]:mt-4 [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:inline-block [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:pb-2\">Convincing the jurors to choose this shortlist was not only an artistic factor.&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">The selection evaluated criteria such as the<strong>&nbsp;affinity of the feature films with European values<\/strong>, the<strong>&nbsp;promotion of inter-cultural ideals<\/strong>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<strong>ability to stimulate public debate<\/strong>.<\/span>&nbsp;The aim of the award, after all, is to &#8220;reach where laws cannot reach,&#8221; stressed <strong>Sabine Verheyen<\/strong>, (EPP) Vice-President of the European Parliament, at a press conference.<\/p>\n<h3 id='the-candidates'  id=\"boomdevs_1\">The candidates<\/h3>\n<p class=\"my-2 [&amp;+p]:mt-4 [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:inline-block [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:pb-2\">The competition includes established directors such as<strong> Joachim Trier<\/strong>, 51, who gained fame with <em>Reprise<\/em>, the story of two writers in Oslo amidst punk atmospheres and the complexities of life. In the running this time with&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lux-award.europarl.europa.eu\/en\/ongoing-selection-2026\/sentimental-value\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&nbsp;Sentimental Value,<\/a>&nbsp;he will try to win with the story of two sisters who reunite with their father, a once-famous director, as he attempts<\/span>&nbsp;to make a comeback. The cast includes star <strong>Elle Fanning<\/strong> and celebrated Swedish actor <strong>Stellan Skarsg\u00e5rd<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-2 [&amp;+p]:mt-4 [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:inline-block [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:pb-2\">More experienced is&nbsp;<strong>Jafar Panahi<\/strong>, 65, 2012 Sakharov Prize winner and exponent of the Iranian New Wave. He has served as an assistant director on numerous films directed by the renowned filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami. In competition with <a href=\"https:\/\/lux-award.europarl.europa.eu\/en\/ongoing-selection-2026\/it-was-just-an-accident\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">It Was Just an Accident<\/a>, he tells the story of the repression of the Tehran regime through the adventures of a night driver mistaken for a prison officer. <strong>The film was shot without the official authorisation of the Iranian authorities.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"my-2 [&amp;+p]:mt-4 [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:inline-block [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:pb-2\">Also featured is the latest film&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">by<strong>&nbsp;Brendan<\/strong><\/span><strong>&nbsp;Canty,<\/strong> an American musician and director who&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">attempts to win the LUX Award with the Irish charm of<a href=\"https:\/\/lux-award.europarl.europa.eu\/en\/ongoing-selection-2026\/christy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&nbsp;<\/a><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lux-award.europarl.europa.eu\/en\/ongoing-selection-2026\/christy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Christy.<\/a> The protagonist is the very young <strong>Danny Power<\/strong>, who plays a boy kicked out of his foster home and forced to live with his older half-brother, with whom he no longer has contact.<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-2 [&amp;+p]:mt-4 [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:inline-block [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:pb-2\"><span style=\"text-align: inherit\">For Spain, there is&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit\">Eva Libertad<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit\">, who participates with<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lux-award.europarl.europa.eu\/en\/ongoing-selection-2026\/deaf\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"text-align: inherit\" rel=\"noopener\"> Sorda<\/a><span style=\"text-align: inherit\">.<\/span>&nbsp;The film, which began as a short film in 2021, was later expanded into a feature film and released in cinemas in 2025. The plot tells of \u00c1ngela, a deaf woman who is expecting a child with her hearing partner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-2 [&amp;+p]:mt-4 [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:inline-block [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:pb-2\">The youngest in the race is French <strong>Anna Cazenave Cambet,<\/strong> 35, with <a href=\"https:\/\/lux-award.europarl.europa.eu\/en\/ongoing-selection-2026\/love-me-tender\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Love Me Tender<\/a>, presented in the <em>Un Certain Regard<\/em> section at the <strong>78th Cannes Film Festival.<\/strong> The lead character is played by Luxembourgish <strong>Vicky Krieps,<\/strong> a 40-year-old woman who loses custody of her son after confessing to her ex-husband that she has romantic relationships with other women.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-o-mail-quote-node=\"1\" data-o-mail-quote=\"1\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">SENTIMENTAL VALUE explores the deep well of pain between parents and children to profound effect.<\/p>\n<p>An intimate exploration of history, art, and the intersection of the two within a family.<\/p>\n<p>Few filmmakers express vulnerability like Trier while still making us laugh. The vote of both groups will count for 50% of the total. European viewers will benefit from free screenings throughout the Union and subtitling in all recognised EU languages. Audiences will be able to express their&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">preferences on<a href=\"https:\/\/luxaward-rating.europarl.europa.eu\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&nbsp;the LUX Audience Award evaluation platform<\/a><\/span>. MEPs will view the feature films in the coming months, before the vote and the final ceremony in mid-April in Brussels.
