The Court of Justice of the EU, with a <a href=\"https:\/\/curia.europa.eu\/juris\/document\/document.jsf;jsessionid=9B7A01060E5F71B5BFC3C0E1BC84E4A9?text=&amp;docid=305206&amp;pageIndex=0&amp;doclang=EN&amp;mode=req&amp;dir=&amp;occ=first&amp;part=1&amp;cid=556307\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">judgment<\/a>, made it clear that <strong>&#8220;although the common meaning of the term &#8216;baggage&#8217; refers to objects, that does not allow the conclusion to be drawn that pets do not fall within that concept<\/strong>.&#8221; Pets, in essence, are considered in the same way as suitcases and duffel bags.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">From a&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">legal perspective, for the judges of Luxembourg, the&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/EN\/legal-content\/summary\/montreal-convention-on-air-carrier-liability.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&nbsp;Montreal Convention&nbsp;<\/a><\/span>&nbsp;is an international treaty that regulates the liability of airlines in the international transport of passengers, baggage,<\/span>&nbsp;and cargo.<\/span><span>&nbsp;Under this treaty, the term &#8220;persons&#8221; includes the term &#8220;passengers&#8221;, so that, the Court of Justice of the EU explains, &#8220;a pet cannot be assimilated to a passenger.&#8221; It therefore follows that in the case of travel by air, a pet falls within the notion of &#8220;baggage&#8221;, and compensation for damage resulting from its loss is subject to the liability regime laid down for the latter.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>These legal clarifications have practical implications for all owners of four-legged friends, and there are many. In the European Union, there are <strong>69.3 million dogs and almost 81 million cats,<\/strong> according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/europeanpetfood.comingsoon.site\/about\/statistics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">census conducted by FEDIAAF<\/a>, the association of pet food manufacturers.
