With a large but not overwhelming majority (457 votes in favour, 103 against, and 72 abstentions), the Strasbourg plenary passed a resolution today (22 October) on the &#8220;<strong>polarisation and increased repression<\/strong>&#8221; in the Balkan country, just under 12 months after the collapse of the bus shelter in the city of <strong>Novi Sad<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>That event, which resulted in the deaths of 16 people, was the <b>catalyst for a broad-based popular mobilisation <\/b>on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/01\/31\/serbia-protests-will-mark-the-end-of-the-regime-of-aleksandar-vucic-interview-with-srdan-cvijic\/\"><b>scale never seen before<\/b><\/a> (at least since the collapse of Yugoslavia in the 1990s).&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">To the citizens\u2014led mainly by the&nbsp;<strong>student movements<\/strong>\u2014who are forcefully demanding an end to corruption, a European future for their country, and an end to the authoritarian regime of the pro-Russian president&nbsp;<strong>Aleksandar Vu\u010di\u0107<\/strong>, the security apparatus <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/03\/17\/pressure-mounts-on-serbian-regime-and-the-eu-after-largest-demonstration-in-the-countrys-history\/\">responded with an iron fist<\/a>, deploying a&nbsp;<strong>massive crackdown on democratic dissent<\/strong>.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A situation that, if it only seems to bother the EU leadership to a certain extent (as can be seen from the balancing act of <strong>Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong>, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/10\/15\/von-der-leyen-to-vucic-serbia-must-double-efforts-towards-eu-accession\/\">recently met<\/a> the Serbian head of state, but also from those of the <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/05\/13\/costa-meets-vucic-but-without-condemning-belgrades-drift-toward-moscow\/\">President of the European Council<\/a>, <strong>Ant\u00f3nio Costa<\/strong>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/05\/22\/eu-silent-on-serbia-after-costa-not-even-kallas-criticises-vucic\/\">High Representative<\/a>&nbsp;<strong>Kaja Kallas<\/strong>), continues to worry MEPs. If Belgrade wants to show that it is serious about <strong>accession to the EU<\/strong>, the joint resolution reads between the lines, it must <strong>stop the machinery of violence<\/strong>, <strong>respect the rule of law and human rights<\/strong>, and stop <strong>winking at Moscow<\/strong>.\n<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-o-mail-quote-node=\"1\" data-o-mail-quote=\"1\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Now is the time for strategic choices.<\/p>\n<p>Also for Serbia.<\/p>\n<p>It needs implementing EU reforms it has repeatedly promised to deliver.<br \/>\nIt needs responding to what citizens ask loud and clearly.<\/p>\n<p>Now is the time to deliver &amp; lead Serbia to the EU.<\/p>\n<p>The EU&#8217;s offer will not be matched.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/NrdHD0YQga\">pic.twitter.com\/NrdHD0YQga<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Marta Kos (@MartaKosEU)<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MartaKosEU\/status\/1980869182985023660?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">October 22, 2025<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">\n<p>Speaking during yesterday&#8217;s debate in the hemicycle, Enlargement Commissioner <strong>Marta Kos<\/strong> condemned the violence against students, protesters, and journalists and warned Belgrade: &#8220;<strong>We expect Serbia to respect the core values of the EU<\/strong>&#8221; if it really wants to join the twelve-star club, she noted, including &#8220;respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law, and human rights&#8221; including &#8220;freedom of peaceful assembly, media and academic freedom.&#8221; The Union, she added, expects that&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"><strong>investigations into the events in Novi Sad<\/strong>&nbsp;will be duly conducted, as an investigation has begun but has not yet led to any results<\/span>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">Kos welcomed the <strong>recent progress on the pre-accession reforms<\/strong> agreed with Brussels (e.g. on the unified voting register and the electronic media commission), but emphasised that &#8220;<strong>concrete steps must now be taken to restart the dialogue with the whole society<\/strong>.&#8221; Vu\u010di\u0107 himself <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/08\/22\/serbia-vucic-attempts-dialogue-with-protesters-lets-discuss-together\/\">boasted<\/a> that he wanted to open a dialogue with the protesters, only to leave the situation unchanged. &#8220;Bringing a democratic Serbia into the EU is in the interest of the Serbs and also in ours,&#8221; she says, but for this to happen, we need concrete commitments &#8220;on democratic principles and reforms.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">Above all, she urged, the Balkan country must put an end to its <strong>balancing act on the international chessboard<\/strong>\u2014President Vu\u010di\u0107<br \/>\n<a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/05\/08\/all-of-putins-men-whos-attending-moscows-may-9-parade\/\">is traditionally close<\/a> to <strong>Vladimir Putin<\/strong>&#8216;s Russia but recently seems to have <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/06\/11\/serbia-pro-russian-president-aleksandar-vucic-in-ukraine-for-the-first-time\/\">softened tones<\/a> also towards <strong>Ukraine<\/strong>\u2014and &#8220;choose with transparency&#8221; which side it wants to be on. &#8220;Close <strong>relationships with Beijing and Moscow<\/strong> accompanied by <strong>critical statements about the EU<\/strong>, including with a Russian narrative, is not what is expected of a candidate country,&#8221; notes Kos, who also condemns the <strong>spreading disinformation<\/strong> and intimidation suffered by some MEPs. Picking up on a leitmotif dear to the pro-Kremlin narrative, the 5-Star MEP railed against the temptation to &#8220;use the same <strong>disastrous method adopted at Euromaidan<\/strong>, which helped <strong>bring war to Europe&#8217;s doorstep<\/strong>.&#8221; The reference is to the alleged hand of the EU, the US, and NATO in the street protests (which Ukrainians call the <strong>Revolution of Dignity<\/strong>) that, in the autumn between 2013 and 2014, led to the overthrow of the pro-Russian president <strong>Viktor Yanukovych<\/strong> and set in motion a chain of tragic events that resulted in the annexation of Crimea, the conflict in Donbass and, in 2022, the <strong>large-scale Russian invasion<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">According to Della Valle, who also recognised the liveliness of Serbian society &#8220;capable of activism and of demanding real change,&#8221; during the demonstrations &#8220;<strong>there are no EU flags<\/strong>&#8221; and &#8220;the Serbian people have not forgotten the <strong>NATO bombings of 1999<\/strong> and the <strong>colonial attitude of many European countries<\/strong>, including Italy, which has turned the Balkans into a powder keg.&#8221; &#8220;Let us be very careful <strong>not to add fuel to the fire<\/strong>,&#8221; he warned, because the region would be &#8220;a pressure cooker ready to burst.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the MEPs&#8217; crosshairs is Belgrade&#8217;s response to the oceanic protests that have been shaking the Balkan country for almost a year, as well as President Aleksandar Vu\u010di\u0107&#8217;s closeness to Russia.
