Starmer: &#8220;Maximum pressure on Moscow&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels &#8211; In the aftermath of the EU summit, at which the Twenty-Seven<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/10\/24\/not-just-frozen-russian-assets-leaders-are-asking-for-support-options-for-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">failed<\/a> to find an agreement on the use of <strong>proceeds from Russian assets tied up<\/strong> in Europe for support to Ukraine, <strong>Volodymyr Zelensky<\/strong> travelled to London today (24 October) to attend yet another meeting of the <strong>coalition of the willing<\/strong>, chaired by British Prime Minister <strong>Keir Starmer<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The host&#8217;s message is clear: it is necessary that Kyiv&#8217;s <strong>Western allies<\/strong>\u2014and especially those of the Old Continent\u2014<strong>contribute &#8220;more&#8221;<\/strong> to strengthen the defence of the attacked country, especially with &#8220;<strong>long-range weapons<\/strong>&#8221; to strike deep into Russian territory. The reference is to the notorious US-made Tomahawk missiles, which President <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/10\/20\/trump-tough-on-zelensky-at-white-house-meeting-eu-on-the-sidelines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recently refused<\/a> to provide to Ukraine. Last September,&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/09\/04\/ukraine-security-guarantees-from-26-countries-yet-all-eyes-are-on-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\">&nbsp;Macron announced&nbsp;<\/a><\/span>that 26 coalition countries would be willing to <strong>provide some form of support to Kyiv<\/strong>, including by <strong>sending ground troops<\/strong>. Today, he reiterated that &#8220;we must continue to intensify our military support&#8221; to Kyiv, equipping it with &#8220;<strong>air defence capabilities, long-range capabilities, drones and anti-drone systems<\/strong>.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">Opening the summit proceedings, Starmer stated that the current one &#8220;is the <strong>time of maximum pressure<\/strong>, because it is the only way to <strong>change Putin&#8217;s mind, bring him to the table, and stop the killing<\/strong>.&#8221; In the coming months, he continued, the goals should be the <strong>removal<\/strong> <strong>of Russian oil and gas from the global market<\/strong>, the upgrading of Ukraine&#8217;s air defence and energy infrastructure, and precisely the supply of long-range weapons to Kyiv. And he added that it is necessary to &#8220;<strong>complete the work on Russian sovereign assets<\/strong> and free up billions of euros to help finance Ukrainian defence.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">In the past few hours, Europeans<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/10\/23\/eu-adopts-19th-sanctions-package-against-russia-kallas-aligned-with-the-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have enthusiastically welcomed<\/a> the decision of the US administration to <strong>sanction the two Russian oil giants<\/strong> (Lukoil and Rosneft). This was an unexpected move on the part of the White House, which, according to observers, signals a change of pace&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">in the approach towards Moscow, following the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/08\/13\/the-summit-in-alaska-is-a-victory-for-putin-who-aims-at-neutralising-the-us-in-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\">&nbsp;<br \/>face-to-face meeting in mid-August<\/a><\/span>&nbsp;between the tycoon and <strong>Vladimir Putin<\/strong>. At the same time, yesterday, the EU adopted its <strong>19th package of restrictive measures<\/strong> against the Kremlin.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">&#8220;We all agree that the fighting must stop and that <strong>negotiations must start from the current line of contact<\/strong>,&#8221; Starmer reiterated. However, international diplomacy does not seem to be playing any part in this conflict.&nbsp;Negotiations to reach a truce have repeatedly ended in nothingness over the past months.
