Catherine Connolly is the new president"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"my-2 [&amp;+p]:mt-4 [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:inline-block [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:pb-2\">Brussels &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/10\/24\/a-psychoanalyst-for-president-ireland-goes-to-polls-to-choose-new-head-of-state\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Catherine Connolly<\/strong><\/a> did not win; she won in a landslide&nbsp;to become <strong>President of the Republic of Ireland.<\/strong> The independent candidate, backed by <strong>left-wing parties,<\/strong> dominated the vote. The result left no doubt: Connolly secured <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presidentialelection.ie\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">63 percent of the votes<\/a>, more than double the 29 percent of her opponent, <strong>Heather Humphreys.<\/strong> Voter turnout was lower than usual, however, with only <strong>46 percent of eligible voters<\/strong> casting their ballots.<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-2 [&amp;+p]:mt-4 [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:inline-block [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:pb-2\">In her inaugural speech, Connolly outlined the cardinal points of her mandate: &#8220;I will be <strong>a voice for peace<\/strong>, a voice that builds on <strong>our policy of neutrality<\/strong>, a voice that expresses the existential threat from <strong>climate change<\/strong>. Together, we can shape <strong>a new republic that values all,<\/strong> one that <strong>promotes diversity<\/strong> and has confidence in our identity.&#8221; Her victory is a strong signal to the center-right government.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-o-mail-quote-node=\"1\" data-o-mail-quote=\"1\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">I just wanted to take a moment to congratulate Irish President Elect Catherine Connolly a progressive thinker who has beaten the tide of right wing populism. She didn\u2019t just win, she won by an ACTUAL landslide.<\/p>\n<p>I have long said, as did the late great John Lewis, that women\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/politicsusa46\/status\/1982479516422271084\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&nbsp;<\/a>\u2014 &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/C3S9YiGw8U\">pic.twitter.com\/C3S9YiGw8U<\/a>&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;(@politicsusa46) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/politicsusa46\/status\/1982479516422271084?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 26, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">\n<p>Connolly has given a&nbsp;<strong>voice to the dissatisfied,<\/strong> affected by the <strong>prohibitive cost of living<\/strong> and the <strong>housing crisis.<\/strong> Her electoral success was made possible by unprecedented&nbsp;<strong>unity on the left,<\/strong> which supported her candidacy from the start. The approach was different, however, on the right, where internal splits within the coalition composed of the <strong>Fine Gael<\/strong> party and its government partner, <strong>Fianna F\u00e1il<\/strong>, conditioned the race. They proposed the institutional figure of Heather Humphreys late, after other candidates withdrew.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-2 [&amp;+p]:mt-4 [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:inline-block [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:pb-2\">Although legitimized by popular vote, the new president, Catherine Connolly, <strong>will play an almost entirely symbolic role,<\/strong> exercising a function similar to that of the head of state in Italy. This does not detract from the political decision of the Irish: only a year ago, they had elected a center-right parliament, but a few months later, the scenario was reversed. The victory of a president who positions herself on the left, perhaps <strong>more to the left than the very parties that supported her<\/strong>, is unique in a Europe that increasingly chooses the right.
