{"id":439191,"date":"2025-11-03T17:58:20","date_gmt":"2025-11-03T16:58:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2025\/11\/03\/il-presidente-della-regione-di-valencia-si-e-dimesso-un-anno-dopo-la-tragedia-della-tempesta-dana\/"},"modified":"2025-11-03T18:23:21","modified_gmt":"2025-11-03T17:23:21","slug":"the-president-of-valencia-region-resigned-one-year-after-dana-storm-tragedy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/11\/03\/the-president-of-valencia-region-resigned-one-year-after-dana-storm-tragedy\/","title":{"rendered":"The president of Valencia region resigned one year after Dana storm tragedy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-align: inherit\">Brussels &#8211; After a year of stubborn reluctance, the president of the Spanish region of Valencia,&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit\">Carlos Maz\u00f3n,<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit\">&nbsp;has succumbed to political and public pressure and&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit\">has resigned over the failed management of the floods<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit\">&nbsp;that killed 229 people in several locations around the capital on 29 October 2024.<\/span>&nbsp;The clash between the Valencian Generalitat, led by the conservatives of the People&#8217;s Party, and the socialist government in Madrid, over responsibility for the tragedy, also involved the then Minister for Spanish Transition, Teresa Ribera, in the early stages, threatening to compromise her<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/11\/14\/what-is-the-ribera-case-shaking-spanish-and-european-politics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&nbsp;appointment<\/a>&nbsp;as executive vice-president of the European Commission.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This morning, in a press conference in which he did not accept questions, Maz\u00f3n announced that he was quitting the regional presidency: &#8220;I can no longer go on,&#8221; he told reporters, admitting some mistakes but <strong>accusing Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez once again of having obstructed the relief effort out of political calculation<\/strong> and of having done a poor job in reconstruction. So, after rejecting calls to step back for a year, he relented. An investigation is underway to determine criminal responsibility for the failure to manage the flooding. Still, it is clear that, from a political point of view, resignation seemed inevitable to most.&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">But the strong polarisation in Spanish national politics has made the tragedy a political case and battleground between the leader of the Popular Party,&nbsp;<strong>Alberto N\u00fa\u00f1ez Feij\u00f3o<\/strong>, and the socialist government of Pedro S\u00e1nchez.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">So much so that the Iberian tug-of-war over responsibility reached the European institutions in Brussels, keeping the College of Commissioners&#8217; approval process in a stalemate for days. <strong>In fact, the Popular Party accused Teresa Ribera<\/strong>, the then Minister for Transition and now Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, of being the real culprit of the disaster.
