Yesterday (6 November), the US president hosted at the White House his counterparts from the five countries in the region, which is particularly strategic at this historical stage: <strong>Kassym-Jomart Tokayev<\/strong> (Kazakhstan), <strong>Sadyr Japarov<\/strong> (Kyrgyzstan), <strong>Emomali Rahmon <\/strong>(Tajikistan), <strong><span class=\"mw-page-title-main\">Serdar Berdimuhamedow <\/span><\/strong>(Turkmenistan), and <strong>Shavkat Mirziyoyev<\/strong> (Uzbekistan).&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It was the first time that Central Asian heads of state were all welcomed together in the US capital. The countries of the region <strong>already sell these strategic products to Beijing and Moscow <\/strong>in much larger quantities than they export&nbsp;to Western partners.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">What upsets Washington and Brussels, however, is the fact that <strong>China<\/strong> holds the <strong>world monopoly in the extraction and processing<\/strong> of these minerals, indispensable for <strong>digital, military, and green technologies<\/strong> (and for contending for global hegemony in the 21st century), and has recently caused turmoil in both the United States <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/10\/27\/eu-china-at-loggerheads-brussels-prepares-response-to-beijings-restrictions-on-rare-earths\/\"><b>and the EU<\/b><\/a> by imposing <b>controls on exports<\/b> of these key products.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">\n<p>&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">As<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/09\/17\/caucasus-commissioner-marta-kos-visits-azerbaijan-and-armenia\/\" target=\"_blank\">&nbsp;seen recently&nbsp;<\/a>in the meeting with the leaders of&nbsp;<strong>Armenia<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Azerbaijan<\/strong>, the tycoon once again&nbsp;<\/span>fielded his direct, muscular, and transactional approach.<\/span>&nbsp;<em>Do ut des<\/em>. &#8220;<strong>One of the key items on our agenda is critical minerals<\/strong>,&#8221; he stated candidly, emphasising the need to &#8220;<strong>expand our supply chains<\/strong>&#8221; around the world. Starting with the countries that, he specified, &#8220;once hosted the <strong>ancient Silk Road<\/strong> linking East and West.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">Geographical bridge, but also, indeed, a well-stocked mine. In an attempt to <strong>break the Dragon&#8217;s monopoly<\/strong>, Washington established the <strong><em>Minerals Security Partnership<\/em> (MSP)<\/strong> with Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan in 2022, which was extended to the rest of the C5 last year. Trump also secured the signing, albeit symbolic, of the <strong>Abraham Agreements<\/strong> by <strong>Kazakhstan<\/strong>, a Muslim-majority country. The 2020 treaties, among the tycoon&#8217;s main foreign policy legacies in his first term, aim&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">to normalise&nbsp;<strong>diplomatic relations between Israel and its regional neighbours<\/strong>&nbsp;in an anti-Iran context<\/span>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">And the European Union? The EU leadership seems to have realised the region&#8217;s strategic potential only rather late. In January 2024, it<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/01\/29\/from-europe-to-central-asia-in-15-days-eu-announces-10-billion-investment-for-trans-caspian-transport-corridor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&nbsp;promised<\/a> investment of \u20ac10 billion in sustainable mobility through the&nbsp;<strong>Trans-Caspian Corridor<\/strong>. Last April, <strong>Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong> announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/04\/04\/eus-chase-for-new-partners-von-der-leyen-bets-on-central-asia-and-announces-12-billion-investment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">another 12 billion<\/a> for cooperation on <strong>critical raw materials and energy<\/strong>. In the following months, Brussels <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/09\/16\/von-der-leyen-challenges-china-lets-export-clean-tech-to-africa-and-central-asia\/\"><b>began to focus<\/b><\/a> on exporting <i>green tech made in the EU<\/i> to Central Asia, and then concentrated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/10\/27\/eu-china-at-loggerheads-brussels-prepares-response-to-beijings-restrictions-on-rare-earths\/\"><b>explicitly<\/b><\/a> on rare earths.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">But<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">&nbsp;given current production levels,&nbsp;<strong>removing dependence on Beijing<\/strong>&nbsp;is far from easy<\/span>.<\/span>&nbsp;For now, the <strong>EU can breathe a sigh of relief<\/strong>. The danger of a total stop of imports from China has been averted\u2014and indeed not thanks to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/11\/03\/europe-chinese-rare-earths-supply-safe-again-thanks-however-to-xi-trump-agreement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&nbsp;the European negotiators<\/a>\u2014at least for the next 12 months. It remains to be seen whether and how this &#8220;gained&#8221; year will be used to <strong>rebalance these structural asymmetries<\/strong>. Trump&#8217;s United States has made its move.
