Today (25 November), MEPs accused Budapest of having <strong>transformed into a &#8220;hybrid regime of electoral autocracy&#8221;<\/strong> and again called for sanctions against Hungary.<\/p>\n<p>It is a different parliament, with a centre of gravity shifted to the right and a group\u2014the Patriots for Europe\u2014founded by the Hungarian prime minister himself. Yet, <strong>the tough report on the Hungarian situation was approved by a very large majority<\/strong>: 415 votes in favour, 193 against, and 28 abstentions. The far-right wing, consisting of the Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) and the Patriots and Sovereignists (ESN), opposed it. A year later, <strong>the situation in Budapest has only worsened<\/strong>: domestically, with the further <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/06\/05\/eu-advocate-general-hungarys-clampdown-on-lgbt-rights-violates-eu-law\/\">clampdown<\/a> on the rights of the LGBTQI+ community, laws to silence dissidents, threats to judicial independence, clientelistic networks, and in Brussels, with Budapest&#8217;s constant blackmail in foreign policy, where the 27 decide unanimously, and with the pro-Russian premier&#8217;s forging ahead (or towards Moscow).<\/p>\n<p>For the EU Parliament, the EU is not blameless either. &#8220;<strong>The lack of decisive action by the Commission and the Council<\/strong> has allowed a continuous erosion of democracy and the rule of law,&#8221; said Tineke Strik, Green MEP and rapporteur of the report. Any further delay by the Council would violate the very values it claims to defend,&#8221; Strik insisted. In the report, MEPs denounced the Hungarian Supreme Court&#8217;s review of EU Court of Justice rulings before they are implemented, <strong>the systematic refusal to implement the rulings of the European Court of Human Rights<\/strong>, the &#8220;link between corruption and electoral integrity, including patronage networks,&#8221; the systematic weakening of the National Judicial Council, the failure to protect citizens&#8217; rights, threats to academic freedom, the allocation of state advertising to pro-government media, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/press-room\/20250628IPR29278\/statement-by-vp-stefanuta-for-the-30th-budapest-pride\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">de facto ban on Pride marches<\/a>.<br \/>\n<em><\/p>\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\"><span style=\"font-style: normal\">Orb\u00e1n did not miss a thing, not even attempting to target some MEPs, such as the Italian Ilaria Salis, but above all, Peter Magyar, an EPP member and the main political opponent in Budapest. <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-style: normal\">Just a few months before the parliamentary elections\u2014scheduled for next April<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-style: normal\">\u2014the EU Parliament highlighted &#8220;the increasing use of artificial intelligence-generated and unlabelled political content&#8221; in Hungary, and in particular &#8220;the intentional dissemination of deepfake videos on social channels closely linked to the party and the prime minister&#8217;s campaign.&#8221; The Fidesz propaganda machine\u2014Strasbourg attacks\u2014deliberately uses&nbsp;AI-generated content to &#8220;deceive voters and discredit opponents.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\"><span style=\"font-style: normal\">As if this were not enough, recently,<\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px;font-style: normal\">&nbsp;some media <\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"><\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px;font-style: normal\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/10\/09\/orbans-spies-in-european-commission-new-hungary-case-breaks-out-in-brussels\/\" target=\"_blank\">revealed&nbsp;<\/a><\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"><\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px;font-style: normal\">an alleged spying network orchestrated by Budapest within<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal\">&nbsp;the EU institutions. The European Commission has announced an investigation into the case: the European Parliament has called for it to be &#8220;presented as soon as possible&#8221; and for &#8220;any conclusions to have concrete consequences.&#8221; There may already be a further development confirming the EU Parliament&#8217;s harsh theses: according to various media, <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-style: normal\">Orb\u00e1n will travel to the Kremlin on Friday, 28 November<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-style: normal\">, to meet\u2014for the third time since the start of the war in Ukraine\u2014Vladimir Putin.
