{"id":441671,"date":"2025-12-10T18:18:38","date_gmt":"2025-12-10T17:18:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2025\/12\/10\/ungheria-indagini-su-un-attivista-lgbtq-le-ong-casi-del-genere-finora-solo-in-russia-o-turchia\/"},"modified":"2025-12-10T18:46:18","modified_gmt":"2025-12-10T17:46:18","slug":"hungary-investigation-into-lgbtq-activist-ngos-such-cases-so-far-only-in-russia-or-turkey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/12\/10\/hungary-investigation-into-lgbtq-activist-ngos-such-cases-so-far-only-in-russia-or-turkey\/","title":{"rendered":"Hungary: investigation into LGBTQ+ activist, NGOs: &#8220;Such cases so far only in Russia or Turkey&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"my-2 [&amp;+p]:mt-4 [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:inline-block [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:pb-2\">Brussels &#8211; Hungarian activist <strong>G\u00e9za Buz\u00e1s-H\u00e1bel<\/strong> has been investigated and faces up to a year in prison for organising <strong>the Gay Pride march in P\u00e9cs, southern Hungary.<\/strong> &#8220;This is the first known case in the European Union where a human rights defender is criminally prosecuted for organising a Pride march. <strong>A case so far only seen in Russia or Turkey<\/strong>,&#8221; said <strong>four Hungarian<\/strong> <strong>human rights organisations<\/strong> in a joint statement.<\/p>\n<h3 id='hungary-s-iron-fist'  id=\"boomdevs_1\">Hungary&#8217;s iron&nbsp;fist&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<p class=\"my-2 [&amp;+p]:mt-4 [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:inline-block [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:pb-2\">The Hungarian government had announced <strong>an&nbsp;<\/strong><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"><strong>iron-fist<\/strong>&nbsp;approach to<\/span>&nbsp;Pride protesters this year. The authorities <strong>had banned this type of event altogether,<\/strong> allowing the police to <strong>use facial recognition software<\/strong> to identify participants and potentially fine them. Protests erupt after parliament passes legislation restricting the right of assembly, banning Pride (Photo by Balint Szentgallay \/ NurPhoto via AFP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3 id='the-activist-facing-conviction'  id=\"boomdevs_2\">The activist facing conviction<\/h3>\n<p class=\"my-2 [&amp;+p]:mt-4 [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:inline-block [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:pb-2\">G\u00e9za Buz\u00e1s-H\u00e1bel, a gay Roma boy, played a central role <strong>in the organisation of Hungary&#8217;s only Pride away from the capital,<\/strong> which in October ended without any particular bans. The problems, however, started shortly afterwards. The boy was questioned by the police in the following days. The police took over the case, and it appears that Buz\u00e1s-H\u00e1bel could face a suspended prison sentence of up to three years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-2 [&amp;+p]:mt-4 [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:inline-block [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:pb-2\">The LGBTQ+ activist is no stranger to targeted attacks by Hungarian authorities.&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"><strong>Last year, he was fired from his state job as a teacher<\/strong>&nbsp;after teaching for a decade.<\/span>&nbsp;Even at the music centre where he had worked, he was fired after five years. The activist reported his difficulties to <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/dec\/10\/teacher-hungary-facing-criminal-charges-pride-event\" target=\"_blank\">The Guardian<\/a>: &#8220;I have already experienced the personal cost of this system: I have lost all my jobs, I have been put under surveillance by the secret service, and now I face potential criminal charges.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3 id='the-warning-to-the-commission'  id=\"boomdevs_3\">The warning to the Commission<\/h3>\n<p class=\"my-2 [&amp;+p]:mt-4 [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:inline-block [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:pb-2\">A number of organisations, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/documents\/eur27\/0495\/2025\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amnesty International<\/a>, are now spreading the story of Buz\u00e1s-H\u00e1bel. In the joint document they have released, a direct appeal is made to the European Commission to stop authoritarianism in Hungary. They wrote in a note: &#8220;So far, the Commission has limited its reaction to an &#8216;assessment&#8217; of the changes. This raises an unavoidable question: how long can the European Commission remain in &#8216;evaluation&#8217; mode while a teacher risks imprisonment for exercising the rights it claims to want to protect?&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 id='the-frozen-18-billion'  id=\"boomdevs_4\">The frozen 18 billion&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<p class=\"my-2 [&amp;+p]:mt-4 [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:inline-block [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:pb-2\">The evaluations to which the associations refer are the recommendations made by the European body in the 2025 <a href=\"https:\/\/commission.europa.eu\/strategy-and-policy\/policies\/justice-and-fundamental-rights\/upholding-rule-law\/rule-law\/annual-rule-law-cycle\/2025-rule-law-report_en?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Report on the Rule of Law<\/b><\/a>. When these recommendations were formalised in July, the European Commissioner for Justice,&nbsp;<strong>Michael McGrath<\/strong>, said: &#8220;It is deeply disappointing that we are not able to report any further progress on the recommendations made last year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-2 [&amp;+p]:mt-4 [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:inline-block [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:pb-2\">However, it is not entirely true, as the organisations claim, that the Commission is doing nothing. Indeed, the rise of right-wing-oriented majorities, most recently that of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/12\/05\/czech-republic-andrej-babis-solves-his-conflict-of-interest-hes-no-longer-babisconi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Andrej Babi\u0161<\/a> in the Czech Republic, among the 27, is not helping advance the case against Hungary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-2 [&amp;+p]:mt-4 [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:inline-block [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:pb-2\">A breakthrough could come after the April parliamentary elections, where Victor Orban, in an election that could prove very difficult for him, will have to contest his seat with former ally <strong>Peter Magyar<\/strong>. In any case, despite promising a more democratic approach, Magyar himself <strong>cannot be said to be a supporter of LGBTQ+ minority rights<\/strong>. His electorate comes from the ranks of the <strong>conservative right<\/strong> <strong>and centre-right<\/strong>, and that is precisely why he did not show up on the streets of Budapest for the June Pride.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>G\u00e9za Buz\u00e1s-H\u00e1bel, a gay Roma boy, organised the October Pride in P\u00e9cs, in the south of the country.
