{"id":442628,"date":"2026-01-08T16:24:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T15:24:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2026\/01\/08\/acqua-potabile-lue-avverte-litalia-monitoriamo-lattuazione-delle-regole-pronti-ad-agire\/"},"modified":"2026-01-08T16:55:25","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T15:55:25","slug":"drinking-water-eu-warns-italy-we-are-monitoring-implementation-of-rules-and-are-ready-to-take-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2026\/01\/08\/drinking-water-eu-warns-italy-we-are-monitoring-implementation-of-rules-and-are-ready-to-take-action\/","title":{"rendered":"Drinking water: EU warns Italy, &#8220;We are monitoring implementation of rules and are ready to take action&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels \u2013 <span lang=\"en-GB\">&#8220;<b>The Commission is monitoring the implementation of the Drinking Water Directive in Italy and will not hesitate to take action<\/b> if evidence of systematic non-compliance emerges.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/span><span lang=\"it-IT\"><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">Through the Commissioner for the Environment,&nbsp;<strong>Jessika Roswall<\/strong>, Brussels warns Rome and Giorgia Meloni&#8217;s government: on water management and compliance with drinking water rules, effective from January 2023, it is ready to initiate new procedures and referrals.<\/span>&nbsp;A warning that sounds like an invitation to do things properly.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"it-IT\"><span lang=\"it-IT\"><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">It is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/doceo\/document\/E-10-2025-004036_IT.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a parliamentary question<\/a> submitted by representatives of the Five Star Movement&nbsp;<strong>Valentina Palmisano<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Danilo Della Valle<\/strong>&nbsp;that brings Italy back into the spotlight.<\/span>&nbsp;The Five Star Movement denounces irregularities in the Avellino area, but Roswall responds&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">that, at present,&nbsp;<strong>the European Commission &#8220;has not received any formal reports of violations<\/strong>&nbsp;of the <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/PDF\/?uri=CELEX:32020L2184\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Drinking Water Directive<\/a>&#8221;&nbsp;<\/span>&nbsp;in the area. This does not detract from the fact that the country has a history of delays in implementing the rules, and for this reason, Brussels will continue to keep up the pressure.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"it-IT\"><span lang=\"it-IT\">&#8220;It is up to the Italian authorities to ensure compliance with EU law, monitor water quality and, if necessary, take appropriate corrective measures,&#8221; Roswall continues. Translated: the Commission &#8220;expects the competent national authorities to fulfil these obligations and that the populations concerned are protected and informed.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"it-IT\"><span lang=\"it-IT\">The Drinking Water Directive obliges all EU Member States to ensure, first and foremost, that tap water is safe and clean.
