Brussels – Meloni, Milei, Le Pen, Salvini and Netanyahu<\/strong>. This is the (partial) list of those featured in Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orb\u00e1n’s new election advert. <\/strong>Ahead of the elections, the Hungarian Prime Minister wants to close ranks and show his compatriots the support of his most loyal friends. The moment is decisive: parliamentary elections will be held on 12 April<\/strong>. Orb\u00e1n’s party, Fidesz<\/strong><\/strong>, is polling at 39 per cent<\/strong><\/strong>, while the opposition led by MEP P\u00e9ter Magyar is at 51 per cent. <\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n

The support of friends<\/h3>\n


\n<\/strong><\/strong>Orb\u00e1n, therefore, trailing in the polls, played the international support card<\/strong>. The entire global far right has raised its hand to come to his rescue: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu<\/strong>, France’s Marine Le Pen<\/strong>, president of the conservative Rassemblement National party, Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babi\u0161<\/strong>, Spanish conservative leader Santiago Abascal<\/strong>, Germany’s Alice Weidel<\/strong> of Alternative f\u00fcr Deutschland, and\u00a0even Italy’s own\u00a0Matteo Salvini<\/strong> (Minister of Infrastructure) and Council President Giorgia Meloni<\/strong>. In the video, the Italian Prime Minister highlighted the similarities with Orb\u00e1n: “Together we support a Europe that respects national sovereignty and is proud of its culture and religious traditions<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n

The confusion of the right wing<\/span><\/h3>\n

The presence of the FdI leader infuriated the opposition. “<\/span>A founding member of the European Union cannot lend itself to propaganda operations that legitimise illiberal models<\/span>,” commented European Parliament Vice-President <\/span>Pina Picierno<\/span>, a member of the Democratic Party. According to Picierno, “Giorgia Meloni’s choice <\/span>weakens our country’s authority<\/span> and symbolises <\/span>the confusion that reigns on the right<\/span>.” Indeed, it is not wrong to speak of confusion. Viktor Orb\u00e1n’s challenger in the elections is <\/span>P\u00e9ter Magyar<\/span>, who entered the race with his centre-right party <\/span>Tisza<\/span>. Orb\u00e1n’s challenger was elected to the European Parliament in 2024 with the support of the European People’s Party, of which <\/span>Forza Italia, Giorgia Meloni’s government partner, is a member<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The polls<\/span><\/h3>\n

In Budapest, in any case, the new election advert will be considered to be fair. On 14 January, the results of the poll conducted by the <\/span>Hungarian polling institute Median<\/span> were published: Magyar dominates with <\/span>51 per cent of the vote<\/span>. “We are the majority,” the politician commented on X, adding, “We are facing the last stretch of the marathon from a fantastic position.” <\/span>Orb\u00e1n’s days therefore seem to be numbered, having been in power without interruption since May 2010.<\/span>

Despite the estimates, however, Hungarians have little trust in the democratic system. In fact, <\/span>44 per cent of respondents expect Fidesz to win<\/span>, while only 39 per cent expect Tisza to win. Who knows if the “<\/span>\u00a1Viva la libertad, carajo!<\/span>” (Long live freedom, f***!) shouted at the end of the video by Argentine President <\/span>Javier Milei<\/span> will help Orb\u00e1n tip the balance.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n
