Brussels – Boris Vuj\u010di\u0107<\/strong>, the current governor of the Croatian central bank, will succeed Luis de Guindos as vice\u2011president of the European Central Bank<\/strong>. The Eurogroup, meeting in Brussels, has managed to keep its commitment to immediately name<\/a> the person who will take up the post that will become vacant on June 1<\/p>\n

Vuj\u010di\u0107, a 61-year-old economist, beat out competition from M\u00e1rio Centeno (Portugal), M\u0101rti\u0146\u0161 Kaz\u0101ks (Latvia), Madis M\u00fcller (Estonia), Olli Rehn (Finland), and Rimantas \u0160ad\u017eius (Lithuania). Furthermore, the Croatian was able to go beyond the preferences of the European Parliament, which had included the names proposed by Portugal and Latvia among the list of candidates<\/a>.<\/p>\n

 “I would like to congratulate Boris Vuj\u010di\u0107,” said Kyriakos Pierrakakis<\/strong>, Cypriot Minister of Finance and interim President of the Eurogroup. “<\/span><\/span><\/span>I would say this is a very significant success, a sign of institutional maturity, given the exceptionally large number of candidates and past experiences, such as in 2012, when it took six months to reach a consensus.”
