In 2024, according to research by <a class=\"reset interactable cursor-pointer decoration-1 underline-offset-1 text-super hover:underline font-semibold\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php?title=Trafficking_in_human_beings_statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span class=\"text-box-trim-both\">Eurostat<\/span><\/a>, there were <strong>9,678 people<\/strong>. The figure is in contrast (<strong>-8 per cent<\/strong>) to the last four years, which were marked by a significant increase in the phenomenon. In just over four years, the number of cases rose from 6,000 in 2019 to over 10,000 in 2023. Despite the slight decrease in 2024, the figure remains significant. <\/p>\n<h3 id='women-most-affected'  id=\"boomdevs_1\">Women most affected<\/h3>\n<p class=\"my-2 [&amp;+p]:mt-4 [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:inline-block [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:pb-2\">Those most affected are <strong>women and girls<\/strong>, who account for <strong>63 per cent<\/strong> of the total. One of the reasons for this sad record is the persistence of <strong>sexual exploitation<\/strong>: about <strong>46 per cent<\/strong> of reported cases involve this form of abuse. <\/p>\n<h3 id='forced-labour-italy-among-the-worst-offenders'  id=\"boomdevs_2\">Forced labour: Italy among the worst offenders<\/h3>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">\nAnother worrying phenomenon is the increase in trafficking for forced labour. In 2019, this figure stood at around <strong>20 per cent<\/strong>. By 2024, it had reached <strong>40 per cent<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">Italy is a sad protagonist of this phenomenon. In 2024, <strong>632 cases<\/strong> of labour exploitation were reported to the Italian authorities, slightly less than in France (<strong>752<\/strong>), but much higher than in Germany (<strong>171<\/strong>) and Spain (<strong>246<\/strong>).\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-2 [&amp;+p]:mt-4 [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:inline-block [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:pb-2\">Very often, traffickers do not pay for the crimes they commit. For 2024, Eurostat reports <strong>7,966 suspected traffickers<\/strong> reported across the European Union, but only around <strong>2,600<\/strong> were actually convicted. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-o-mail-quote-node=\"1\" data-o-mail-quote=\"1\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">There were 9 678 registered victims of human trafficking in 2024 in the EU.<\/p>\n<p>Among the victims whose form of exploitation was reported: <\/p>\n<p>4 219 were trafficked for sexual exploitation (46% of all victims)<br \/>\n3 391 for forced labour (37%) <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ypDoljLSsC\">https:\/\/t.co\/ypDoljLSsC<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/1agHkT7ehG\">pic.twitter.com\/1agHkT7ehG<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>\u2014 EU_Eurostat (@EU_Eurostat) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EU_Eurostat\/status\/2016813582298570917?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">29 January 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-o-mail-quote-node=\"1\" data-o-mail-quote=\"1\">\n<h3 id='many-eu-citizens-among-the-victims'  id=\"boomdevs_3\"><span style=\"font-style: normal\">Many EU citizens among the victims<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"my-2 [&amp;+p]:mt-4 [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:inline-block [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:pb-2\"><span style=\"font-style: normal\">The crime of human trafficking does not necessarily involve crossing a border. For this reason, many people become victims within their own country of origin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"my-2 [&amp;+p]:mt-4 [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:inline-block [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:pb-2\"><span style=\"font-style: normal\">This type of exploitation is more likely in areas such as Bulgaria, where <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-style: normal\">99 per cent<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-style: normal\"> of victims are Bulgarian nationals, or in Slovakia, Hungary and Romania. This statistic is rooted in Eastern Europe, given the still numerous cases of <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-style: normal\">sexual exploitation.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"my-2 [&amp;+p]:mt-4 [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:inline-block [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:pb-2\"><span style=\"font-style: normal\">The trend is reversed in countries such as Malta, Italy, Spain, and Denmark, where most victims come from <strong>non-EU countries<\/strong>. In this case, forms of <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-style: normal\">labour exploitation<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-style: normal\"> are more widespread.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The most common form of exploitation is sexual, but cases of forced labour are on the rise.
