In terms of alternative fuels, however, the number of\u00a0<strong>battery electric cars\u00a0<\/strong>registered in Europe in 2024 was 45 times higher than in 2014, rising\u00a0<strong>from 0.3 per cent of the total to 13.9 per cent<\/strong>. Finally, registrations of\u00a0<strong>alternative fuel<\/strong>\u00a0vehicles (LPG, natural gas, hydrogen fuel cells, bioethanol, biodiesel, bi-fuel vehicles, and others) also grew by 13 per cent from 2014 to 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The overview, which covers twenty Member States representing 93 percent of all cars registered in the EU in 2024, comes from a\u00a0<span id=\"OBJ_PREFIX_DWT539_com_zimbra_url\" class=\"Object\" role=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/web\/products-eurostat-news\/w\/ddn-20260220-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><b>report<\/b><\/a><\/span>\u00a0released today by\u00a0<strong>Eurostat<\/strong>, the EU&#8217;s statistical office. The document is part of the 2025 edition of the\u00a0<span id=\"OBJ_PREFIX_DWT540_com_zimbra_url\" class=\"Object\" role=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/en\/web\/products-key-figures\/w\/ks-01-25-057\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">study<\/a><\/span>\u00a0&#8216;Key Figures on European Transport,&#8217; which is dedicated to analyzing data on European passenger and freight transport and their impacts on the economy, energy, and the environment.<\/p>\n<p>Although the trend toward a gradual increase in more sustainable passenger cars is common across the entire Union,\u00a0<b>significant differences emerge\u00a0<\/b>between the more virtuous countries and the less virtuous ones<b>.<\/b>\u00a0At the top of the ranking for the percentage of electric cars registered in 2024 are\u00a0<b>Denmark<\/b>\u00a0(51.3 per cent), Malta (37.7 per cent),\u00a0<b>Sweden<\/b>\u00a0(34.9 per cent), and\u00a0<b>the Netherlands<\/b>\u00a0(34.6 per cent). At the bottom of the table are\u00a0<b>Croatia, Slovakia, Poland, Bulgaria,<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<b>Italy<\/b>.
