EU data on petrol and diesel prices in Europe clearly demonstrate the impact of the <strong>closure of the Strait of Hormuz<\/strong>\u00a0through which around <strong>20 per cent of the world\u2019s oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) passes<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/energy.ec.europa.eu\/data-and-analysis\/weekly-oil-bulletin_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to the latest available EU figures<\/a>, between 6 January and 16 March, the <strong>average price of petrol <\/strong>across the EU rose by <strong>15 per cent,<\/strong> rising <strong>from \u20ac1.604 to \u20ac1.838 per litre<\/strong>. The <strong>cost of diesel<\/strong> rose even more significantly, climbing <strong>from \u20ac1.544 to \u20ac1.949<\/strong><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0with<\/span>\u00a0an average increase of <strong>26.2 per cent<\/strong> across the EU.<\/p>\n<p>&lt;div class=&#8221;flourish-embed flourish-chart&#8221; data-src=&#8221;visualisation\/28136600&#8243;&gt;&lt;script src=&#8221;<a href=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js<\/a>&#8220;&gt;&lt;\/script&gt;&lt;noscript&gt;&lt;img src=&#8221;<a href=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/visualisation\/28136600\/thumbnail\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/visualisation\/28136600\/thumbnail<\/a>&#8221; width=&#8221;100%&#8221; alt=&#8221;visualization&#8221; \/&gt;&lt;\/noscript&gt;&lt;\/div&gt;<\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\"><\/div>\n<p>Although the trend is towards widespread price rises across almost all 27 Member States, the situation varies considerably from country to country. Starting with petrol, in mid-March, the <strong>highest prices<\/strong> were found at petrol stations in the <strong>Netherlands<\/strong> (\u20ac2.262 per litre), <strong>Denmark<\/strong> (\u20ac2.179), <strong>Germany<\/strong> (\u20ac2.085), <strong>Finland<\/strong> (\u20ac1.959), and <strong>Greece <\/strong>(\u20ac1.924). At the bottom of the table, however, were <strong>Bulgaria<\/strong> (\u20ac1.331 per litre), <strong>Malta<\/strong> (\u20ac1.34), <strong>Cyprus<\/strong> (\u20ac1.424), <strong>Slovenia<\/strong> (\u20ac1.443), and <strong>Slovakia<\/strong> (\u20ac1.524). The rankings change significantly, however, when looking at the more telling figure: the percentage increase. In this case, the <strong>largest increases<\/strong> were recorded in <strong>Sweden<\/strong> (+20.38 per cent), <strong>Spain<\/strong> (+18.85 per cent), <strong>Austria <\/strong>(+18.57 per cent), <strong>Romania<\/strong> (+17.49 per cent), and <strong>Luxembourg<\/strong> (+17.30 per cent). Meanwhile, the countries that coped best with the energy shock were \u00a0<strong>Cyprus<\/strong> (6.99 per cent), <strong>Hungary<\/strong> (6.88 per cent), <strong>Ireland<\/strong> (6.50 per cent), <strong>Slovakia<\/strong> (5.10 per cent), and <strong>Slovenia<\/strong> (2.34 per cent). Added to these is <strong>Malta<\/strong>, which saw no change. As for <strong>Italy<\/strong>, the country ranks ninth in the price rankings in absolute terms (<strong>the price of petrol rose from \u20ac1.655 per litre in January 2026 to \u20ac1.819 in March 2026<\/strong>), but eighteenth in terms of percentage increase (<strong>+9.91 per cent<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>It is on <strong>diesel<\/strong> that Italy is suffering the most. Among the 27 EU member states, it ranks fifth for the highest pump prices, with the price rising f<strong>rom \u20ac1.644 per litre at the start of 2026 to \u20ac2.033 a week ago<\/strong>. Italy is surpassed only by the <strong>Netherlands<\/strong> (\u20ac2.264 per litre), <strong>Denmark<\/strong> (\u20ac2.208), <strong>Germany<\/strong> (\u20ac2.146), and <strong>Finland<\/strong> (\u20ac2.108). Paying the least, however, are motorists in <strong>Malta<\/strong> (\u20ac1.21), followed by those in <strong>Bulgaria<\/strong> (\u20ac1.437), <strong>Slovenia<\/strong> (\u20ac1.484), <strong>Slovakia<\/strong> (\u20ac1.528), and <strong>Cyprus<\/strong> (\u20ac1.589). As with petrol, there was no change in price in Malta. Moderate price rises\u2014at least compared to the EU average\u2014were recorded in <strong>Slovenia<\/strong> (+3.49 per cent), <strong>Slovakia<\/strong> (+9.06 per cent), <strong>Hungary<\/strong> (+11.43 per cent),<strong> Ireland<\/strong> (+12.22 per cent), and <strong>Cyprus<\/strong> (+13.42 per cent). Meanwhile, the five countries where prices rose the most were <strong>Sweden<\/strong> (<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">a surge of 35.15 per cent),\u00a0<strong>Spain<\/strong>\u00a0(+32.64 per cent),\u00a0<strong>Estonia<\/strong>\u00a0(+31.09 per cent),\u00a0<strong>Austria<\/strong>\u00a0(+30.70 per cent), and the\u00a0<strong>Czech Republic\u00a0<\/strong>(+29.64<\/span>\u00a0per cent).
