The European Commission, <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_26_672\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in publishing the preliminary data<\/a> of <strong>Eurostat<\/strong>, the Statistical Office of the European Union, and <strong>CARE, the European Union\u2019s road accident database<\/strong>, highlights that this figure represents <strong>580 fewer victims<\/strong> than in 2024, a figure that the Berlaymont building describes as \u201csignificant\u201d, given the increase in the number of vehicles and kilometres travelled on European roads.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn any case, preliminary data highlight the need for sustained efforts at all levels, given that most Member States are <strong>not yet on track to meet the EU\u2019s target of halving<\/strong> (compared to 2019 figures, ed.) the number of <strong>road deaths and serious injuries by 2030<\/strong>,\u201d the Commission states.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;With the launch of the <a href=\"https:\/\/cinea.ec.europa.eu\/publications\/digital-publications\/eu-road-safety-towards-vision-zero_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cVision Zero\u201d strategy<\/a> in 2018, the organisation set itself the target of <strong>reducing road deaths <\/strong>and serious injuries <strong>by 50 per cent by 2030<\/strong>, whilst aiming to achieve <strong>zero<\/strong> fatalities&nbsp;<strong>by 2050<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In 2025, the average European change compared with 2019 stands at <strong>-15 per cent for deaths<\/strong>. Furthermore, it must be borne in mind that for every death, an estimated five people suffer serious injuries, bringing the total number of victims from 19,000 deaths to around <strong>100,000 seriously injured people each year<\/strong> across the EU.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The figures vary considerably across the EU. <strong>Compared with 2019<\/strong>, the largest reductions in deaths were seen in <strong>Poland <\/strong>(-43 per cent), <strong>Denmark<\/strong> (-32 per cent), and <strong>Romania<\/strong> (-30 per cent). By contrast, the countries that have made <strong>the least progress<\/strong> in terms of reducing the number of deaths are <strong>Austria (<\/strong>-5 per cent), <strong>Sweden<\/strong> (-6 per cent), and <strong>Germany<\/strong> (-8 per cent), whilst those that have actually recorded an increase in road deaths are: <strong>Iceland <\/strong>(+67 per cent), <strong>Malta<\/strong> (+31 per cent), <strong>Ireland<\/strong> (+31 per cent) and <strong>the Netherlands<\/strong> (+9 per cent).&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Looking instead solely at the change between <strong>2024 and 2025<\/strong>, the sharpest declines were recorded in <strong>Estonia<\/strong> (-38 per cent) and <strong>Greece<\/strong> (-22 per cent). Conversely, the countries that recorded <strong>minimal reductions or even increases in road deaths<\/strong> were <b class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Spain<span style=\"font-weight: normal\"> (0 per cent)<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">, <\/span><\/span><b class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Sweden<span style=\"font-weight: normal\"> (-2 per cent), and <\/span><b class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Germany<span style=\"font-weight: normal\"> and <\/span><b class=\"ng-star-inserted\">France<span style=\"font-weight: normal\"> (both with a 2 per cent increase in road deaths,&nbsp;<\/span><\/b><\/b><\/b><\/b>slightly up on the previous year<b class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><b class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><b class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><b class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">).<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/b><\/b><\/b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><b class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><b class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><b class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Italy<span style=\"font-weight: normal\"> shows only a modest&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"><strong>4 per cent<\/strong>&nbsp;drop,&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">at 49 deaths per million inhabitants in 2025, a figure higher than the EU average of 43.&nbsp;<\/span><\/b><\/b><\/b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><b class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><b class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><b class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">In absolute terms, by 2025, the safest roads will continue to be those in <\/span>Sweden<span style=\"font-weight: normal\"> (20 deaths per million) and <\/span>Denmark<span style=\"font-weight: normal\"> (23). Conversely, despite progress, <\/span>Romania<span style=\"font-weight: normal\"> (68), <\/span>Bulgaria<span style=\"font-weight: normal\"> (71),  and <\/span>Croatia<span style=\"font-weight: normal\"> (67) continue to record the highest fatality rates in the bloc.&nbsp;<\/span><\/b><\/b><\/b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><b class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><b class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><b class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">According to the 2024 data, <\/span>rural roads<span style=\"font-weight: normal\"> appear to be the most dangerous, accounting for <\/span>53 per cent of fatal accidents<span style=\"font-weight: normal\">, compared with 38 per cent in urban areas and 8 per cent on motorways. In towns and cities, the situation is particularly critical for &#8220;vulnerable road users&#8221; (pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists), who account for <\/span>70 per cent of all fatalities<span style=\"font-weight: normal\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/b><\/b><\/b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><b class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><b class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><b class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">\u201cRoad safety is a shared responsibility between the EU and the Member States, and the steady decline in road deaths across the EU shows that our joint efforts are making a difference,\u201d emphasised <\/span>Apostolos Tzitzikostas<span style=\"font-weight: normal\">, Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism.<\/span><\/b><\/b><\/b><\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Preliminary figures for 2025: a total of 19,400 fatalities, 580 fewer than the previous year.
