This is the call&nbsp;that, from the <strong>Stakeholder Forum of the<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbe.europa.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Circular Bio\u2011based Europe Joint Undertaking<\/a> (CBE JU) held in Brussels on March 24, the European bioeconomy sector is making&nbsp;to EU lawmakers. And more, from the best-known <span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 5:06\"><span class=\"group-hover:bg-base-200 rounded p-0.5 -m-0.5\">supermarket bioplastics<\/span><\/span><span class=\"opacity-80 text-sm\"> to<\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 5:19\"><span class=\"group-hover:bg-base-200 rounded p-0.5 -m-0.5\"> fashion items such as shoes to textiles and chemical products: these are just a few examples of bioeconomy products, that is, goods produced not from petroleum-derived materials, but from locally produced alternatives of biological origin.<span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 4:48\">&nbsp;&#8220;And <\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 5:01\"><strong>we are obviously talking<\/strong> about investments, facilities, <strong>jobs<\/strong>, and products<\/span><span class=\"opacity-80 text-sm\"> <\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 5:06\">which are already on the market,&#8221; explains on the sidelines of the Forum,&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 0:08\"><span class=\"group-hover:bg-base-200 rounded p-0.5 -m-0.5\"><strong>Mario Bonaccorso<\/strong>, director of <a href=\"https:\/\/clusterspring.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cluster Spring<\/a>, the Italian circular bioeconomy cluster <\/span><\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 0:13\"><span class=\"group-hover:bg-base-200 rounded p-0.5 -m-0.5\">which represents over 160 Italian and international players in the bioeconomy active across the peninsula, including <\/span><\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 0:21\"><span class=\"group-hover:bg-base-200 rounded p-0.5 -m-0.5\">universities, centres <\/span><\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 0:27\"><span class=\"group-hover:bg-base-200 rounded p-0.5 -m-0.5\">public or private research centres, SMEs, associations<\/span><\/span><span class=\"opacity-80 text-sm\"> <\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 0:31\"><span class=\"group-hover:bg-base-200 rounded p-0.5 -m-0.5\">sector-specific organisations, large multinationals, but also <\/span><\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 0:38\"><span class=\"group-hover:bg-base-200 rounded p-0.5 -m-0.5\">banking groups, venture capital firms or specialist consultancy firms.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_449081\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Foto-Forum.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-449081\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Foto-Forum-300x135.jpeg\" alt=\"Una immagine dal Forum degli stakeholder della Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBU JU). Source: Eunews<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">\n<p><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 7:13\"><span class=\"group-hover:bg-base-200 rounded p-0.5 -m-0.5\">At the EU level, <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_25_2819\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Commission&#8217;s bioeconomy strategy, presented in November,<\/a>&nbsp;&#8220;is certainly an important step <\/span><\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 7:18\"><span class=\"group-hover:bg-base-200 rounded p-0.5 -m-0.5\">forward,&#8221; but there is a &#8220;need for an action plan, to take action <\/span><\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 7:23\"><span class=\"group-hover:bg-base-200 rounded p-0.5 -m-0.5\">through legislation, and also through a legal definition of the bioeconomy, which is still lacking at the European level.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 8:20\"><span class=\"group-hover:bg-base-200 rounded p-0.5 -m-0.5\"> The fear, therefore, is that technologies developed in Europe may be industrialised elsewhere, in countries with lower production costs and lighter administrative burdens. <span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 7:37\">&#8220;We see and perceive many risks<\/span><span class=\"opacity-80 text-sm\">\u200b<\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 7:47\">, partly because <strong>there are countries that have invested heavily<\/strong><\/span><strong><span class=\"opacity-80 text-sm\"> <\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 7:53\">in recent years in this sector, where Europe has led the way and where we hope it does not lose<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 7:58\"><strong> its leading position,<\/strong>&#8221; explains <strong>Giulia Gregori<\/strong>, <\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 2:26\">head of systemic programme management at Novamont, <\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 2:33\">an Italian company specialising in bioplastics and biochemicals<\/span><span class=\"opacity-80 text-sm\"> <\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 2:39\">using plant-based resources, one of the 400 participants at the 40-country Forum.<\/span><span class=\"opacity-80 text-sm\"> &#8220;W<\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 7:58\">ith its 15th Five-Year Plan<\/span><span class=\"opacity-80 text-sm\">\u200b<\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 8:05\">,&nbsp;<span title=\"Play from 8:20\" class=\"cursor-pointer group\"><span class=\"group-hover:bg-base-200 rounded p-0.5 -m-0.5\"><span title=\"Play from 7:58\" class=\"cursor-pointer group\">China has reaffirmed<\/span><\/span><\/span> the bioeconomy as a key sector, but also the green transition and<\/span> <span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 8:11\">biomanufacturing. So it realised that for decarbonisation, but also for the country\u2019s strategic autonomy<\/span><span class=\"opacity-80 text-sm\"> <\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 8:17\">, these are important sectors\u201d, she added.<\/span><\/span><\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 8:20\"><span class=\"group-hover:bg-base-200 rounded p-0.5 -m-0.5\">And yet,&nbsp;&#8220;to<\/span><\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 8:24\"><span class=\"group-hover:bg-base-200 rounded p-0.5 -m-0.5\">day, precisely in this highly complex geopolitical scenario \u2013 where we have had to<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 8:31\"><span class=\"group-hover:bg-base-200 rounded p-0.5 -m-0.5\">wait for the war in Ukraine to realise that we were importing too much oil and gas from<\/span><\/span><span class=\"opacity-80 text-sm\"> <\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 8:36\"><span class=\"group-hover:bg-base-200 rounded p-0.5 -m-0.5\">Russia and where we saw, with the war in Iran, our dependence on that region<\/span><\/span><span class=\"opacity-80 text-sm\">&nbsp;in terms of<\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 8:40\"><span class=\"group-hover:bg-base-200 rounded p-0.5 -m-0.5\">&nbsp;gas &#8211; <\/span><\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 8:48\"><span class=\"group-hover:bg-base-200 rounded p-0.5 -m-0.5\">we have the opportunity to innovate, to be competitive, and to use materials<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 8:56\"><span class=\"group-hover:bg-base-200 rounded p-0.5 -m-0.5\">raw materials we have on our continent,\u201d&nbsp;Bonaccorso pointed out. &#8220;This means using biomass, especially<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 9:01\"><span class=\"group-hover:bg-base-200 rounded p-0.5 -m-0.5\">in the form of waste, residues, and by-products. This is a competitive advantage because <\/span><\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 9:06\"><span class=\"group-hover:bg-base-200 rounded p-0.5 -m-0.5\">we have the technology and the expertise,&#8221; even though &#8220;we are not so good at the industrialisation phase,<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 9:12\"><span class=\"group-hover:bg-base-200 rounded p-0.5 -m-0.5\">&#8220;and this is the gap we need to bridge,&#8221; he warned. And we must do it together. <span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 0:38\"><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 6:32\">&#8220;As a cluster, we represent Italy, but we are working<\/span> <span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 6:41\">on a very European scale: last year, we launched the EBCA cluster alliance, the&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 6:45\">European Bioeconomy Clusters Alliance \u2013 which started with 14 clusters and today we are more<\/span><span class=\"opacity-80 text-sm\"> <\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 6:52\">than 20,&#8221;&nbsp;Bonaccorso noted. &#8220;The idea is that, <strong>if we want to be competitive<\/strong>, <strong>we must think like Europeans<\/strong>. <\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 6:57\">Therefore, we must overcome the fragmentation of 27 countries, find the things we have in common, and<\/span> <span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 7:03\">also have a common position to bring to the attention of the European Commission<\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 7:13\">&#8220;, he explained.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_449077\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Forum-5.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-449077 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Forum-5-1024x461.jpeg\" alt=\"Una immagine dal Forum degli stakeholder della Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBU JU). With a production value of around 430 billion and <\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 2:32\">two million employees, Italy ranks third in Europe, behind Germany and France. The total value of the sector across the continent is, according to a&nbsp;<\/span> <span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 2:39\"><a href=\"https:\/\/assobiotec.federchimica.it\/docs\/default-source\/studi-di-terzi\/2025_report-bioeconomia-intesa-sanpaolo.pdf?sfvrsn=75516ae4_2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report compiled by the Spring cluster in collaboration with Intesa SanPaolo<\/a>, 3 trillion euros and<\/span><span class=\"opacity-80 text-sm\"> <\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 2:44\">17 million employees. &#8220;A<span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 0:52\"><span class=\"group-hover:bg-base-200 rounded p-0.5 -m-0.5\">cross Italy, we were the first in the<\/span><\/span><span class=\"opacity-80 text-sm\"> <\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 1:01\"><span class=\"group-hover:bg-base-200 rounded p-0.5 -m-0.5\">field of organic waste collection, and all this is also linked to the<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 1:10\"><span class=\"group-hover:bg-base-200 rounded p-0.5 -m-0.5\">development of compostable plastics: <strong>Italy was, in fact, the country that developed them first,<\/strong>&#8221;&nbsp;Bonaccorso recalls. And there is a whole series of composting plants <strong>where organic waste is used to produce fertilizers and biofertilizers, and then biogas and biomethane in aerobic\u2011management facilities that are true urban biorefineries<\/strong>. At the moment, Italy is a leader in this field, which is also why we lead the market for compostable bioplastics and have already reached \u2014 and surpassed \u2014 several EU targets related to waste collection within the circular\u2011economy framework,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play from 1:56\"><span class=\"group-hover:bg-base-200 rounded p-0.5 -m-0.5\">\u200b<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/figure>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">&nbsp;Italy is also one of the main beneficiaries of investments in the bioeconomy promoted by the CBU JU, a 2-billion-euro partnership between the European Union and the private sector. <strong>Since 2014, Italian organisations have received a total of 157.09 million euros for 142 projects, of which 73 have already been completed<\/strong>. Such as EMBRACED, which has developed a technology to transform absorbent hygiene products, such as nappies and menstrual hygiene products, into bio-based materials, fertilisers, and bioplastics; TERRIFIC, which uses agro-industrial residues to produce packaging solutions; CIRCULAR BIOCARBON, which creates organic fertilisers and green graphene from municipal solid waste and sewage sludge to improve the efficiency of batteries and solar panels; or RUNFASTER4EU, which grows oilseed crops on marginal non-food land, helping to restore soil health whilst generating biomass.
