This represents a net increase of <strong>2.2 million<\/strong> jobs and an average annual growth rate of <strong>5.5 per cent<\/strong>. Looking at the most recent available figures\u2014the change between 2022 and 2023\u2014the data remains positive, with an increase of around <strong>4.2 per cent<\/strong> (from 5.6 million jobs to 5.8 million). This decade-long growth trajectory of the European green economy\u2014steady since 2014 but with a marked acceleration beginning in 2020\u2014is confirmed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/web\/products-eurostat-news\/w\/ddn-20260408-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data<\/a> from the accounts of the European environmental goods and services sector (<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php?title=Glossary:Environmental_goods_and_services_sector_(EGSS)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EGSS<\/a>) and published today (8 April) by <strong>Eurostat<\/strong>, the EU\u2019s statistical office.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/EUNEWS-Occupazione_eng.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-449805 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/EUNEWS-Occupazione_eng-819x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"819\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/EUNEWS-Occupazione_eng-819x1024.jpg 819w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/EUNEWS-Occupazione_eng-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/EUNEWS-Occupazione_eng-768x960.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/EUNEWS-Occupazione_eng-1229x1536.jpg 1229w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/EUNEWS-Occupazione_eng-1638x2048.jpg 1638w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/EUNEWS-Occupazione_eng-750x938.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/EUNEWS-Occupazione_eng-1140x1425.jpg 1140w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/EUNEWS-Occupazione_eng.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 819px) 100vw, 819px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The environmental economy is a\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">broad and diverse field, encompassing both activities related to\u00a0<strong>environmental protection\u2014<\/strong>such as waste and wastewater management and other environmental conservation activities\u2014<\/span>and sectors linked to <strong>resource management<\/strong> (energy efficiency measures in the construction sector, renewable energy production, and forest management). Among the activities considered in today\u2019s report, the &#8220;<strong>Clean Air and Energy<\/strong>&#8221; sector contributed the most to the growth of green employment in 2023. Compared to 2022, the number of jobs created in this sector\u2014which includes <strong>renewable energy production and electric vehicle manufacturing<\/strong>\u2014<strong>increased by approximately 1.7 times<\/strong> in 2023. \u201cAn increase,\u201d explains Eurostat, \u201cstemming both from renewable energy production itself and from the manufacture of technologies and equipment for renewables and energy efficiency, as well as from the provision of related services such as installation, engineering, and research.\u201d Employment growth is also quite significant in the long term: from <strong>0.6 million<\/strong> full-time equivalent jobs in 2014, the figure rose to <strong>1 million<\/strong> in 2023, representing\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">a\u00a0<strong>70 per cent<\/strong>\u00a0increase over<\/span>\u00a0ten years.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;<strong>Waste management and materials recovery&#8221;<\/strong> sector is also driving employment growth in the European environmental economy. Jobs in this sector rose by <strong>34 per cent<\/strong> between 2014 (<strong>0.9 million<\/strong> full-time equivalent jobs) and 2023 (<strong>1.3 million<\/strong>). Finally, equally significant growth rates, albeit against a backdrop of a lower absolute number of workers, were recorded in the <strong>wastewater management<\/strong> sector: over the course of ten years, the total number of employees rose <strong>from 0.4 to 0.6 million<\/strong>, marking an increase of <strong>37 per cent<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The Eurostat report also provides important information on the <strong>total value of output<\/strong> from the EU\u2019s green economy. In 2023, activities\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">related to the management of environmental goods and services generated\u00a0<strong>\u20ac1.33 billion in output<\/strong>, a\u00a0<strong>4.3 per cent increase<\/strong>\u00a0from<\/span>\u00a02022, when the figure stood at just over \u20ac1.2 billion. Since 2014, the value of output in the European environmental economy has risen steadily, with an average increase of <strong>7.9 per cent<\/strong> and\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><strong>total output essentially doubling<\/strong>\u00a0compared to \u20ac0.68 billion\u00a0<\/span>twelve years ago. Here too, 2020 can be considered the &#8220;turning point&#8221;, marking the start of much stronger growth than in the past.<\/p>\n<p>The figures relating to <strong>gross value added<\/strong>\u2014that is, the wealth actually generated by each sector of the green economy\u2014are of a different nature. In 2023, the European environmental economy generated <strong>\u20ac492 billion<\/strong>, marking a <strong>slight\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><strong>0.2 per cent<\/strong>\u00a0decline\u00a0<\/span>compared with the previous year. This brought to an end a trend that had been ongoing since 2014, during which, in addition to employment, the value added from environmental activities had also grown at rates higher than those of the EU economy as a whole.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the figures relating to <strong>labour productivity<\/strong>, which measures the contribution made by each full-time employee to the economy\u2019s total value added. In 2023, the sectors with the highest levels of labour productivity were <strong>information<\/strong> and <strong>communication and<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>professional, scientific, and technical activities<\/strong>. Conversely, the lowest figures were observed in <strong>agriculture, forestry, fishing, and construction<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to the Eurostat report, employment growth is being driven by the renewable energy and waste management sectors.
