{"id":450361,"date":"2026-04-15T10:41:23","date_gmt":"2026-04-15T08:41:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2026\/04\/15\/lupo-40-ong-contro-von-der-leyen-sulla-caccia-scelte-anti-scientifiche-serve-una-moratoria\/"},"modified":"2026-04-15T11:20:25","modified_gmt":"2026-04-15T09:20:25","slug":"forty-ngos-challenge-von-der-leyens-wolf-policy-anti-scientific-decisions-on-hunting-a-moratorium-is-needed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2026\/04\/15\/forty-ngos-challenge-von-der-leyens-wolf-policy-anti-scientific-decisions-on-hunting-a-moratorium-is-needed\/","title":{"rendered":"Forty NGOs challenge von der Leyen&#8217;s wolf policy: &#8220;Anti-scientific decisions on hunting; a moratorium is needed&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels \u2013 Regarding the decision to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/09\/25\/wolf-protection-status-revision-eu\/\">downgrade<\/a> the wolf to a non-endangered species, the European Commission, led by <strong>Ursula von der Leyen, has decided to \u201cdismantle\u201d environmental protection laws<\/strong> and regulations for unclear personal reasons, marking &#8220;a deeply worrying chapter in the development of EU environmental governance.&#8221;<span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"it\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">&nbsp;New criticism and fresh attacks are coming from animal\u2011rights and environmental groups against the EU executive, and the decision to loosen the rules on wolf hunting, taken <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/uk\/politics\/article\/ursula-von-der-leyen-warms-to-wolf-culls-after-pony-slaughter-t69mm0dgk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">after the killing of a pony owned by von der Leyen<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span>. <strong>Over 40 organizations from ten EU and non-EU countries<\/strong> (Italy, France, Germany, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Spain, Sweden, Hungary, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland) are calling for &#8220;<span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"it\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">a<strong> total moratorium on wolf culling<\/strong> in the EU&#8221; and <\/span><\/span><\/span>criticize the actions not only of the European Commission, which proposed reviewing the wolf\u2019s conservation status, but also of the other EU institutions that supported it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"it\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The NGOs (in Italy, these include ENPA, LAV, LAC, Salviamo l&#8217;orso, Animalisti italiani, OIPA, and GreenImpact) have no doubts: this is an &#8220;<strong>anti-scientific maneuver to downgrade wolf protection promoted by Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong>, through a 2023 report produced by a Brussels-based consultancy firm \u2013 the N2K Group EEIG \u2013 commissioned and funded by the European Commission.&#8221; This therefore already points to a need for \u201cfull transparency regarding the influence of undeclared private interests on the EU\u2019s decision-making process.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"it\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">\u200b<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"it\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The figures put forward by animal rights activists and environmentalists appear to contradict von der Leyen\u2019s decisions: &#8220;<strong>Losses due to wolf predation are estimated at just 0.06\u20130.07 percent of the total sheep and goat population in the EU<\/strong>: the rest is merely political propaganda.&#8221; Not to mention, the umbrella organization insists, that &#8220;<strong>neither the Commission nor the Member States have ever collected the most basic data<\/strong>: the actual extent of <strong>wolf mortality<\/strong> in Europe.&#8221; In essence, how many wolves die each year in the EU? &#8220;No one knows,&#8221; yet it has been decided to proceed with the hunt anyway.
