{"id":450562,"date":"2026-04-16T11:52:24","date_gmt":"2026-04-16T09:52:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2026\/04\/16\/ue-e-paesi-membri-offrono-oltre-812-milioni-per-alleviare-la-crisi-in-sudan\/"},"modified":"2026-04-16T12:42:50","modified_gmt":"2026-04-16T10:42:50","slug":"eu-states-pledge-812millioni-sudan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2026\/04\/16\/eu-states-pledge-812millioni-sudan\/","title":{"rendered":"EU, member states pledge over 812 million euros to ease Sudan crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels \u2013 Sudan is \u201cthe EU\u2019s main humanitarian priority in Africa.\u201d With these words, the European Commissioner for Crisis Management, Equality and Preparedness, the Belgian\u00a0<strong>Hadja Lahbib<\/strong>, welcomed<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_26_826\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the commitment made by the European Union and its Member States<\/a> to allocate 812.14 million euros to respond to what is currently the world\u2019s most serious humanitarian emergency<\/strong>. The war, now entering its fourth year of destruction and massacres, is resulting in unprecedented casualty figures: there are over 13 million displaced people, 33.7 million people in need of assistance, 30 million in need of food aid, and 12 million, including children, at risk of gender-based violence, while famine has been confirmed in several regions.<\/p>\n<p>The pledges were made at the conclusion of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.auswaertiges-amt.de\/en\/aussenpolitik\/laenderinformationen\/sudan-node\/sudan-conference-2766818\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Third International Conference on Sudan<\/a>, co-organized by the EU together with Germany, France, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the African Union, in Berlin. In her closing address to the Conference, Lahbib noted that &#8220;<strong>the crisis in Sudan is man-made<\/strong>&#8221; and that &#8220;the violence by the warring parties and their sponsors is driving the humanitarian catastrophe.&#8221; A situation in which \u201c<strong>we all hav<\/strong>e\u00a0<strong>a responsibility to push for peace and bring this suffering to an end.\u00a0<\/strong>The Sudanese people need an immediate ceasefire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of the total allocated by the EU,<strong>\u00a0the European Commission\u2019s contribution amounts to 360.8 million euros<\/strong>, of which 215.5 million euros will be allocated to supporting people in need in Sudan and 145.3 million euros will help address the regional refugee crisis triggered by the war in countries such as Chad, South Sudan, Ethiopia, the Central African Republic, Uganda, Egypt, and Libya.<strong>\u00a0The remaining Team Europe funds have been pledged by Austria<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Belgium<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Cyprus<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Estonia<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Finland<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>France<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Germany<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Greece<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Ireland<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Italy<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Luxembourg<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>the Netherlands<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Poland<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Portugal<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Slovenia,<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Sweden<\/strong>. The Commission\u00a0highlighted that &#8220;EU aid will address food insecurity through cash\u00a0assistance, healthcare and nutrition services, water and sanitation, shelter support,\u00a0protection, and education.\u00a0This funding will also help sustain essential services, support livelihoods, and strengthen resilience, while fostering long-term peace-building in Sudan.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>However, according to\u00a0Lahbib, &#8220;<strong>funding alone is not enough. Sudanese responders also need protection<\/strong>. They face the highest risks, but too often receive the least support.&#8221; Therefore, \u201cwe have created the \u2018Protecting Humanitarian Workers\u2019 program to provide relocation, legal assistance, medical care, and psychosocial support,\u201d Lahbib continued, stressing that &#8220;we have already helped over 400 humanitarians, a quarter of them are Sudanese.\u201d Furthermore, \u201cSudanese responders\u00a0are at the heart of this funding\u201d and \u201cfrom this year, at least 25 percent of our humanitarian funding will be allocated to local organizations because they are the ones who can reach people everywhere, even where others cannot,\u201d\u00a0she pointed out.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, \u201cto end the suffering, we must act together.\u201d Lahbib said.
