{"id":452250,"date":"2026-05-05T17:34:18","date_gmt":"2026-05-05T15:34:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2026\/05\/05\/lagarde-i-paesi-con-fonti-energetiche-non-fossili-sono-piu-protetti-dagli-shock\/"},"modified":"2026-05-05T19:03:18","modified_gmt":"2026-05-05T17:03:18","slug":"lagarde-countries-with-non-fossil-fuel-energy-sources-are-better-protected-from-shocks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2026\/05\/05\/lagarde-countries-with-non-fossil-fuel-energy-sources-are-better-protected-from-shocks\/","title":{"rendered":"Lagarde: &#8220;Countries with non-fossil fuel energy sources are better protected&#8221; from shocks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brussels \u2013 &#8220;Alternative energy sources offer the clearest path to minimising trade-offs between European energy policy objectives in terms of security, sustainability, and affordability.&#8221; This was stated by <strong>Christine Lagarde<\/strong>, President of the European Central Bank (ECB), in her&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecb.europa.eu\/press\/key\/date\/2026\/html\/ecb.sp260505~936c9c11b5.en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">introductory speech&nbsp;<\/a>at the&nbsp;<\/span><span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;Climate, Nature and Monetary Policy&#8221;&nbsp;conference being held today (5 May) in Frankfurt am Main.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The ECB\u2019s analysis of the current energy shock shows that <strong>countries where a larger share of electricity is generated from non-fossil fuel sources, such as Spain and Portugal<\/strong>, \u201c<strong>have been better protected from rising gas prices<\/strong><\/span>,<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>\u201d<\/strong> Lagarde emphasised. The President of the Central Bank also highlighted the scale of climate and environmental risks, as well as the inadequate response from governments and society. \u201c<br \/>\nThe past decade has thrown up a troubling paradox: every new data point tells us to accelerate the green transition\u2014and yet it is losing pace,\u201d she observed.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The President of the Eurotower pointed out that this has been the warmest decade on record and that the rate of sea-level rise has doubled since satellite measurements began, while&nbsp;scientists&nbsp;believe it is likely that the world will exceed the 1.5-degree limit set by the Paris Agreement within the next five years. &#8221;<br \/>\nBut sharper awareness has not been matched by sharper resolve. <\/span><strong>The green transition has, if anything, lost momentum<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><\/p>\n<p>,&#8221; said Lagarde.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Last year, global carbon emissions from fossil fuels hit a record high, rising by 0.7 per cent, and, according to Lagarde, although governments once showed a united resolve in Paris, we now see backtracking in certain jurisdictions.&nbsp;According to the president, &#8220;part of the reason is that <\/span><strong>climate change&nbsp;has itself become a partisan issue<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.
