{"id":452306,"date":"2026-05-06T12:09:09","date_gmt":"2026-05-06T10:09:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2026\/05\/06\/marcinelle-diventi-il-simbolo-delle-vittime-sul-lavoro-la-proposta-del-parlamento-europeo\/"},"modified":"2026-05-06T12:44:30","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T10:44:30","slug":"european-parliament-proposes-making-marcinelle-a-symbol-for-victims-of-workplace-accidents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2026\/05\/06\/european-parliament-proposes-making-marcinelle-a-symbol-for-victims-of-workplace-accidents\/","title":{"rendered":"European Parliament proposes making Marcinelle a symbol for victims of workplace accidents"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brussels \u2013 The first approval has been issued, opening the way for <\/span><strong>8 August to become the European Day for victims of workplace accidents and for promoting workers\u2019 protection and dignity\u200b\u200b.<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Today, 6 May, members of the European Parliament\u2019s Committee on Employment and Social Affairs approved a motion for a resolution calling for the establishment of the Day, alongside a greater commitment from institutions to reduce the number of workplace accidents, occupational diseases, and deaths.&nbsp;The text was adopted by 45 votes in favour, none against, and 6 abstentions.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span>&nbsp;<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In 2023 (the latest year with complete data), the EU recorded <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/web\/products-eurostat-news\/w\/ddn-20251014-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3,298 workplace fatalities <\/a>and roughly 2.8 million non\u2011fatal accidents resulting in at least four days of absence. The choice of 8 August recalls the <\/span><strong>1956&nbsp;<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Marcinelle tragedy<\/strong>, when 262 people \u2013 including 136 Italian immigrants \u2013 died in a coal mine. A day that is \u201ca symbol of a memory that belongs not only to Italy, but to all&nbsp;of Europe, and which imposes a shared responsibility on the safety front,\u201d <strong>Salvatore De Meo<\/strong>, MEP for Forza Italia, said.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Day is designed to raise public awareness of the importance of workplace prevention and safety and promote the implementation of practical initiatives in schools and workplaces. MEPs have also called on the Commission to assess and <strong>address the occupational health and safety risks associated with artificial intelligence<\/strong> and algorithmic management systems. According to MEPs,<strong> workers employed through digital labour platforms may \u201cbe exposed to greater risks<\/strong> due to intensified work rates, excessive monitoring, and insufficient transparency in algorithmic decision-making processes.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The resolution calls on the Commission to assess and anticipate occupational health and safety risks linked to climate-related factors, such as heat stress, extreme weather events, and air pollution.
