Rome \u2013 The award ceremony for the “Dream for Europe”<\/a> photography competition, organised by <\/a>Fondazione<\/a> Articolo 49 in collaboration with the European Parliament offices in Italy<\/strong>, took place today (8 May) in the enchanting Sala della Protomoteca<\/strong> of the Campidoglio Palace in Rome<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The initiative, aimed at secondary school pupils, invited students to use photographs, collages, and digital works to explore \u201cthe fears, hopes, and visions of the Europe of the future<\/strong>\u201d. The event is part of the celebrations for Europe Day, which is commemorated every 9 May to mark the Schuman Declaration<\/a> and the birth of the European project.<\/p>\n

The ceremony was opened by the Director of the European Parliament Office in Italy, Carlo Corazza<\/strong>, who thanked the students for the \u201cwonderful creations\u201d they had produced for the competition and outlined the history of European integration. \u201cLet\u2019s celebrate Europe because 76 years ago the Schuman Declaration set us on a wonderful path<\/strong>,\u201d he said, also recalling Italy\u2019s role, from Ventotene to the Treaties of Rome. Corazza described Europe as \u201cthe greatest area of freedom<\/strong>,\u201d where today it is possible to \u201cstudy, travel, work, and love whoever you want.\u201d Addressing the young people, he added: \u201cYour generation deserves to be able to dream as mine once did.\u201d<\/p>\n

Claudio Casini<\/strong>, Head of the European Commission\u2019s Representation in Italy, also emphasised the relationship between Europe and young people. \u201cThe main aim is to reach out to young people like you,\u201d he explained, emphasising that 9 May marks the beginning <\/strong>“of a European peace process that has lasted to this day<\/strong>.\u201d Casini highlighted that rights and freedoms cannot be taken for granted: \u201cIn some countries, girls cannot dress as they please or freely express their opinions. Here in Europe, we can do so.\u201d For this reason, he concluded, \u201cwe must protect freedom, democracy and opportunities for the future as well<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Andrea Poli<\/strong>, president of Fondazione Articolo 49, spoke about the symbolic significance of the initiative: \u201cThe European institutions have chosen Rome and have chosen you, young people, to celebrate Europe\u201d. Poli noted that next year marks the 70th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome, described alongside the Italian Constitution as \u201cthe two pillars upon which we have built decades of peace, prosperity and hope<\/strong>.\u201d Explaining the meaning of the project, Poli said that \u201cwe started with the Eurobarometer, which highlighted young people\u2019s fears for the future of Europe, and we asked you to draw your hopes.\u201d He then added: \u201cIn your artwork, after the weapons, there are books<\/strong>,\u201d seeing in this a message of confidence in the value of study and personal commitment.<\/p>\n

Another partner in the project is the Generali Group<\/strong>. The group\u2019s Head of International Affairs, Fabio Marchetti<\/strong>, explained the reasons behind the support for the initiative: \u201cGenerali has always been European, believes in the values of the Union, and wants to stand by the younger generation not just in words, but in deeds.\u201d He then announced the donation of \u201c30 computers for the three winning classes<\/strong>,\u201d as a \u201cconcrete gesture\u201d to support schools and creativity.<\/p>\n

Finally, it was time for the political speeches. The Vice-President of the European Parliament, Antonella Sberna,<\/strong> urged the young people \u201cnever to stop dreaming\u201d and \u201calways to believe in yourselves.\u201d<\/span> In her speech, she emphasised that \u201cit is never too late to realise what your dream really is\u201d and described European citizenship as \u201cthe best thing that could happen to you.\u201d Finally, she highlighted the European Union\u2019s purpose as a shared project: \u201cEuropean nations have chosen to come together for a better future for everyone<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n

The speeches were concluded by the other Vice-President of the European Parliament, Pina Picierno<\/strong>, who, quoting the poet Danilo Dolci, recalled that \u201ceveryone grows only if they are dreamed of<\/strong>,\u201d linking this idea to the future of Europe. \u201cToday, it is easier to fuel fears than to build hope,\u201d she said, emphasising, however, that \u201cEurope was born from the choice to transform divisions and national interests into cooperation, solidarity, and peace\u201d.
