Meanwhile, the far right and the radical left are maintaining their roles as opposition parties. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2026\/05\/20\/eu-us-trade-parliament-and-council-reach-agreement-on-tariffs-that-implement-the-joint-declaration\/\"><b>The interinstitutional agreement<\/b><\/a> on tariffs has given rise to both common ground and differences of opinion within the EU institution directly elected by citizens, regarding a contentious issue which, however, has met with the approval of the EPP, S&amp;D, RE, and ECR groups, while leaving room for discontent among the Left and the sovereigntists of PfE, with the latter choosing to remain silent.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It is mainly the EPP that is celebrating the agreement reached between Parliament and the Council: <strong>&#8220;<\/strong><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"it\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><strong>The agreement offers greater certainty to European businesses, helping to protect investment and economic stability<\/strong>,&#8221; commented the <strong>EPP<\/strong> group, sticking to the line that &#8220;Europe cannot afford a trade conflict with its most important strategic and economic partner.&#8221; <\/span><\/span>The <strong>S&amp;D<\/strong> group, on the other hand, rejoices&nbsp;because &#8220;the EU-US trade agreement now includes real protections for European workers and businesses.<span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">&#8221;&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span>The Socialist coordinator on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/committees\/en\/inta\/home\/highlights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Committee on International Trade<\/b><\/a>, <strong>Brando Benifei<\/strong> (PD), points out that &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/07\/28\/eu-us-reach-tariff-deal-15-rate-and-eu-commitment-to-energy-purchases-from-the-us\/\">the Tumberry agreement<\/a> <b>was never what we wanted,&#8221;<\/b> but &#8220;rather than accepting the agreement as it stood, we insisted on the introduction of concrete safeguards to protect European interests.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>MEPs from the <strong>Renew Europe<\/strong> group also say they are \u201cpleased\u201d that the inter-institutional agreement on tariffs includes \u201c<span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"it\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Trump-proof\u201d clauses. According to <strong>Karin Karlsbro<\/strong>, the European Liberals\u2019 lead negotiator on the dossier, \u201cEurope has now set the terms for transatlantic relations,\u201d and with the finalisation of the agreement, \u201cwe are doing everything possible to ensure the greatest possible stability for ourselves and for European businesses under the current circumstances.\u201d <strong>The Conservatives are also satisfied<\/strong>. &#8220;The ECR Group has always advocated the need for a pragmatic and forward-looking transatlantic trade relationship, centred on growth, stability, and cooperation. Today\u2019s agreement moves in this direction,\u201d said <strong>Kris Van Dijck<\/strong>, the group\u2019s negotiator.<\/span><\/span><\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Greens are sceptical<\/strong>, with Belgian MEP <strong>Sara Matthieu<\/strong> asking: &#8220;<strong>What is an agreement with Trump worth?<\/strong> Last summer, he signed the agreement; this winter, he simply announced a 25 per cent tariff&nbsp;on European cars, in defiance of all the agreements.&#8221; On a war footing is <strong>Pasquale Tridico<\/strong>, head of the Five Star Movement delegation to the European Parliament: \u201cWe are facing a crushing defeat<strong>&nbsp;for our Made in Italy products,<\/strong> which will be penalised by unilateral tariffs of 15 per cent compared to US products, which, in some cases, do not even pay tax on the profits they generate.\u201d However, <strong>criticism comes from the entire Left group<\/strong>:<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>&#8220;The <span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"it\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">EU-US agreement provides for 15 per cent tariffs on EU exports and zero tariffs on US imports.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Meanwhile, Europe will be forced to purchase over \u20ac1 trillion worth of oil, liquefied natural gas, and defence products from the United States.&#8221; <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The inter-institutional agreement reached by the European Parliament and the Council has been welcomed by the EPP, S&amp;D, RE and ECR groups.
