In particular, a spokesperson for the East Flanders Public Prosecutor\u2019s Office stated that <strong>the<\/strong> <strong>two boys who lost their lives were aged 12 and 15, and that five other schoolmates were reported to be seriously injured<\/strong>. None of the train passengers, however, seems&nbsp;to have sustained significant injuries.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As for the circumstances of the accident, an initial account was provided by <strong>Thomas Baeken<\/strong>, the spokesperson for <strong>Infrabel<\/strong>, the company that manages the Belgian rail network. Speaking to the Flemish broadcaster<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vrt.be\/vrtnws\/nl\/liveblog\/4-doden-in-buggenhout-2-kinderen-van-15-en-12-jaar-een-27jari~1779780387016\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <em>VRT<\/em><\/a>, Baeken stated that \u201cthe collision occurred at 8.08 am and <strong>footage shows that the level crossing barriers were down and the signal was red<\/strong>\u201d at the time of the impact between the train and the bus. Coming from a parallel road, <strong>the school bus is believed to have turned left across the tracks<\/strong>. According to Baeken, &#8220;the train driver applied the emergency brakes, but the collision was unavoidable.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The students on board the bus were all pupils at the <strong>Ritchmont Campus<\/strong> in Buggenhout, a school that mainly caters for secondary school pupils, and the vehicle they were travelling in was operating as a subcontractor for the regional public transport company, <strong>De Lijn<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Leading institutional representatives from Belgium and the European Union have already sent their messages of condolence. &#8220;<strong>Deeply saddened by the terrible accident in Buggenhout, my thoughts are with the families affected<\/strong>,&#8221;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Bart_DeWever\/status\/2059220627257442777\"> wrote on X<\/a> the country\u2019s Prime Minister, <strong>Bart De Wever<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/vonderleyen\/status\/2059210833016623284\">Also via X<\/a>, the President of the European Commission, <strong>Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong>, expressed her &#8220;deepest condolences to the families of the victims and their relatives.&#8221; She added that &#8220;<strong>today Europe mourns with Belgium<\/strong>.&#8221; The President of the European Council, <b>Antonio Costa<\/b>, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/eucopresident\/status\/2059227306590134340\">said he was<\/a> \u201cdeeply saddened by the tragic collision,\u201d sending his thoughts to the victims and their loved ones and wishing \u201c&nbsp;all those injured a swift recovery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Condolences also came from the President of the European Parliament, <strong>Roberta Metsola<\/strong>: &#8221;<br \/>\nThe grief and heartbreak are immense today.<\/p>\n<p>It is unbearable to imagine the pain the tragic collision between a train and a school bus in Buggenhout has brought, on what should have been an ordinary morning.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Europe stands together in mourning with the families of the victims and with all those injured and affected by this terrible day.<\/p>\n<p>Europe grieves with you,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/EP_President\/status\/2059223178082140578\">wrote on X<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The collision took place at around 8 am this morning in the municipality of Buggenhout.
