The issue of restrictive measures against members of the Tel Aviv government was discussed by foreign ministers today (28 May), but \u201cthe <span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"it\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Gymnich format (informal meeting, ed.) is not a forum where we take decisions,\u201d and therefore \u201c<strong>we will return to this topic when the Foreign Affairs Council meets in Luxembourg<\/strong>,\u201d explains the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy,<strong> Kaja Kallas<\/strong>, at the end of the meeting. Everything has been postponed to 15 June, the date of the formal meeting.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>There are concerns over the actions of the Tel Aviv government, which has launched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/5\/28\/israel-intensifies-attacks-on-southern-lebanon-killing-at-least-16-people\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new strikes on Lebanon<\/a> in defiance of the&nbsp;ceasefire. <span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"it\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">&#8220;<strong>In Lebanon, the ceasefire seems to be becoming more and more of a mere formality with each passing day<\/strong>, and<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">a return to full-scale war is a real possibility,&#8221; Kallas denounces, in what amounts to a condemnation of Israel\u2019s military actions.<\/span><\/span><\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The European Union, however, remains divided over what action to take. Sanctions are approved unanimously, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2026\/04\/21\/no-eu-sanctions-against-israel-the-association-agreement-will-not-be-suspended-italy-stands-by-netanyahu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">once again, the EU is unable to find common ground against Israel<\/a>, much to Luxembourg\u2019s dismay: \u201c<strong>Germany and Austria say they have an eternal debt to Israel, but that cannot be used to excuse what is happening today<\/strong>,\u201d thunders the Grand Duchy\u2019s Foreign Minister, <strong>Xavier Bettel<\/strong>, determined to take action against Israel. It is not only Austria and Germany that are holding back, but also Bulgaria and the Czech Republic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Spain has also taken a firm stance: \u201cIt is <strong>unacceptable<\/strong> for southern Lebanon to be declared a war zone and for the population to be warned to leave the area,\u201d says the Spanish Foreign Minister, <strong>Jos\u00e9 Manuel Albares<\/strong>, who goes on to add: \u201c<strong>Other countries have the same right as Israel to have a state<\/strong>.\u201d For the Madrid government, the situation is such that Israel can no longer be considered a democracy because \u201cdemocracies do not violate international law and human rights.\u201d Spain\u2019s uncompromising stance is summed up by effectively declaring Israel\u2019s Minister of National Security a &#8220;persona non grata&#8221;: \u201c<strong>I demand that Ben Gvir not be allowed to enter the EU<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"lRu31\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<div class=\"OvtS8d\">&#8220;<strong>Sanctions must be imposed on Ben Gvir<\/strong>,&#8221; insists Foreign Minister <strong>Antonio Tajani<\/strong>, looking ahead to the ministerial meeting in June. &#8220;We must decide at the next Council meeting,&#8221; is Italy\u2019s call and hope. However, everything is subject to discussion at the table, and it cannot be ruled out that the issue may end up at the centre of the summit of heads of state and government, scheduled for 18 and 19 June, just a few days after the meeting of foreign ministers.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The informal nature of the foreign ministers\u2019 meeting makes it impossible to reach a decision.
