{"id":455559,"date":"2026-06-03T14:23:22","date_gmt":"2026-06-03T12:23:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2026\/06\/03\/commissione-ue-contro-le-accuse-usa-sul-lavoro-forzato-dazi-ingiustificati\/"},"modified":"2026-06-03T16:08:33","modified_gmt":"2026-06-03T14:08:33","slug":"european-commission-responds-to-us-forced-labour-allegations-tariffs-unjustified","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2026\/06\/03\/european-commission-responds-to-us-forced-labour-allegations-tariffs-unjustified\/","title":{"rendered":"European Commission responds to US forced labour allegations: &#8220;Tariffs unjustified&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels \u2013 &#8220;<strong>The Commission considers the tariffs imposed by the United States of America<\/strong>&#8221; on goods produced by forced labour to be unjustified.<strong> Tensions between the two sides of the Atlantic continue to run high,<\/strong>&nbsp;and the EU Commission\u2019s trade spokesperson, Olof Gill, responds to <a href=\"https:\/\/ustr.gov\/about\/policy-offices\/press-office\/press-releases\/2026\/june\/ustr-makes-findings-and-proposes-action-60-section-301-investigations-relating-failures-take-action\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the accusations from the US government<\/a>, which yesterday (2 June) decided to raise tariffs on products deemed to be the result of forced labour in a total of 60 countries. Among these, <strong>the EU,<\/strong> which, according to the US administration\u2019s statement, <strong>is specifically listed among the six economies<\/strong> \u2013 alongside Canada, Ecuador, Indonesia, Mexico, and Pakistan \u2013 <strong>that \u201chave failed to effectively enforce the ban on imports of goods produced by forced labour.\u201d<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ansa.it\/sito\/notizie\/topnews\/2026\/03\/13\/usa-indagine-su-60-economie-per-le-pratiche-di-lavoro-forzato_d0aa108c-15dc-4e73-ae8f-050baf4a9c90.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The investigation, launched in March,<\/a> also involved a further 54 countries \u2013 including China, Hong Kong, Japan, Russia, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom \u2013 to which additional tariffs of 12.5 per cent have been applied. For the EU, and the other countries in the group to which it belongs, an additional tariff of 10 per cent is proposed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>Brussels, therefore, rejects the accusations and stands by its reputation as a reliable partner<\/strong>. \u201cA deal is a deal: on the EU\u2019s part, we are on track to ensure the implementation of the tariff commitments set out in our joint statement by the end of June,\u201d Gill emphasised. \u201cWe expect the United States to fully comply with the terms of the Joint Statement, and the Commission will continue to ensure that the European Union\u2019s interests are fully protected.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2026\/05\/08\/tariffs-trump-gives-eu-july-4-deadline-in-call-with-von-der-leyen\/\">This dispute further heightens an&nbsp;already heated political climate,&nbsp;<\/a>which in early May saw Trump issue an ultimatum to Brussels&nbsp;to scrap&nbsp;tariffs on US exports by 4 July; otherwise US tariffs on all &#8220;Made in the EU&#8221; goods would have risen&nbsp;well above the 15 per cent set in last July\u2019s agreements.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Regarding&nbsp;the allegations levelled at Brussels, the European Commission \u201ctakes note of the preliminary findings and proposed actions arising from the US Section 301 investigations into trade in goods produced using forced labour.\u201d Furthermore, it points out that \u201cas we have consistently made clear throughout this process, the European Union fully shares the United States\u2019 concerns regarding forced labour and remains fully committed to eliminating it from global supply chains through concrete action.\u201d In this regard, <strong>spokesperson Gill highlights the EU\u2019s commitment in this area, with <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/IT\/ALL\/?uri=CELEX:32024R3015\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the 2024 regulations<\/a> prohibiting the placing on the EU market of all products made with forced labour<\/strong>, regardless of whether they originate in the EU or a third country: \u201cOne of the most ambitious instruments of its kind worldwide,\u201d the spokesperson notes.
