T<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">he European Commission spokesperson,<\/span><b> Markus Lammert<\/b>,<b> <a href=\"https:\/\/audiovisual.ec.europa.eu\/en\/media\/video\/I-290801\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced it<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> during today\u2019s (8 June) daily press briefing.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On 6 March 2026, the European Commission invoked the new&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_25_1517\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>enhanced visa suspension mechanism&nbsp;<\/b><\/a><span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">for the first time in response to the Georgian government\u2019s deliberate and persistent violation of democracy and fundamental rights. This means that Georgian citizens holding diplomatic or service passports require a visa to enter the Schengen area. When a <\/span>visa waiver agreement<span> is suspended, \u201cthe Commission initiates what is known as an enhanced dialogue with the third country concerned, with the aim of remedying the circumstances that caused it,\u201d explained Lammert, adding that this would be \u201cthe subject of the next meeting.&#8221;<\/span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The reasons that led the government to activate the mechanism date back to October 2024 and relate to &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_26_564\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the crackdown on protesters, opposition politicians and independent media<\/a>.&#8221;Although the June meeting aims for \u201cdialogue\u201d, the spokesperson reiterated that <\/span><strong>the actions of the Georgian authorities undermine the principles on which visa liberalisation is based<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, including respect for human rights and democratic principles, and are incompatible with the Union\u2019s rules and values. Not only that: for Brussels, these moves hinder the smooth development of economic, humanitarian, cultural, scientific, and other ties between the Union and Georgia. &nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span>Georgia has been a candidate country for accession to the European Union since December 2023. However, in 2024, due to the course of action adopted by the Tbilisi government, which Brussels deemed \u201ccontrary to the EU\u2019s founding values and principles,\u201d the country\u2019s accession process effectively halted.
