The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_26_1350\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>European Commission<\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> explained that the partnership \u201cwill strengthen EU-Brazil cooperation on shared digital priorities, including data governance, artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure and connectivity, online platforms, and digital public goods and services.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span><a href=\"https:\/\/digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu\/en\/policies\/partnerships\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Digital partnerships<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> such as this one are an instrument of the EU\u2019s external digital policy, \u201cenabling structured cooperation with like-minded countries on shared priorities,\u201d according to the European Commission\u2019s website. Today\u2019s agreement is the fifth <\/span>digital partnership agreement signed by the European Union, following those signed with Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and Canada. The initiative comes at a time when Brussels is seeking to reduce its technological dependence on the United States and China and to strengthen cooperation with countries considered reliable.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The agreement was signed by the European Commission\u2019s Executive Vice-President for Technological Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, <\/span><b>Henna Virkkunen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and by the Brazilian Secretary for Trade Promotion, Science, Technology, Innovation and Culture, <\/span><b>Alex Giacomelli da Silva<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In addition, <strong>an&nbsp;<\/strong><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu\/en\/news\/dsa-br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">administrative agreement<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>&nbsp;was signed by the Commission services and the Brazilian Ag\u00eancia Nacional de Prote\u00e7\u00e3o de Dados to strengthen cooperation on the protection of children online<\/strong>. The aim of the partnership is to step up joint efforts to promote efficient and resilient global supply chains and contribute to an inclusive, rules-based global digital governance system. It also aims to ensure that the benefits of technological progress are shared more equitably at a global level.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span><strong>In January 2026, the Commission and Bras\u00edlia adopted<a href=\"https:\/\/commission.europa.eu\/law\/law-topic\/data-protection\/international-dimension-data-protection\/adequacy-decisions_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&nbsp;<\/a>mutual<a href=\"https:\/\/commission.europa.eu\/law\/law-topic\/data-protection\/international-dimension-data-protection\/adequacy-decisions_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> adequacy decisions<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, confirming that their levels of data protection are comparable. Recognising \u201cthe high standards of data protection that safeguard consumers and citizens on both sides,\u201d the Commission wrote, \u201cthese agreements allow businesses, public authorities and researchers to exchange data between the EU and Brazil freely and securely, without further requirements.\u201d<\/span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Not only that: digital cooperation has long been a central component of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/international-partnerships.ec.europa.eu\/countries\/brazil_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">EU-Brazil Strategic Partnership<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, with the EU-Brazil Digital Dialogue enabling partners to step up exchanges in key priority areas and working to promote digital development and inclusion.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Commission has stated that the partnership signed today will be implemented through regular high-level exchanges and dedicated technical working groups. Furthermore, \u201cthe first meeting of the Digital Partnership Council is scheduled to take place within the next 12 months.
