{"id":456737,"date":"2026-06-15T17:22:29","date_gmt":"2026-06-15T15:22:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2026\/06\/15\/bilancia-commerciale-di-ue-e-zonaeuro-in-rosso-deficit-da-71-miliardi-e-da-1-miliardo-ad-aprile\/"},"modified":"2026-06-15T17:55:43","modified_gmt":"2026-06-15T15:55:43","slug":"eu-and-eurozone-trade-balances-in-the-red-deficits-of-e7-1-billion-and-e1-billion-in-april","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2026\/06\/15\/eu-and-eurozone-trade-balances-in-the-red-deficits-of-e7-1-billion-and-e1-billion-in-april\/","title":{"rendered":"EU and eurozone trade balances in the red: deficits of \u20ac7.1 billion and \u20ac1 billion in April"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brussels &#8211;  As of April 2026, the eurozone recorded a deficit of one billion euros <\/span>in trade in goods with the rest of the world, compared with a surplus of 8.7 billion euros recorded the previous year. <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/web\/products-euro-indicators\/w\/6-15062026-bp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to Eurostat<\/a>, the European Union\u2019s statistical office, <strong style=\"font-weight: 400\">exports of European goods amounted to \u20ac255.4 billion, an increase of 5 per cent<\/strong> <strong>compared with April 2025<\/strong> (\u20ac243.3 billion) and <strong style=\"font-weight: 400\">imports to \u20ac256.4 billion, an increase of 9.3 per cent compared to last year <\/strong>(\u20ac234.6 billion).&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"xMmqsf\">Eurostat points out that the deficit for April 2026 is down from a surplus<span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"it\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">&nbsp;of \u20ac4.9 billion recorded in the previous month, representing a decline of \u20ac9.7 billion compared to last year.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">According<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;to the agency, this is attributable to an increase in the energy deficit\u2014that is, the difference between what is spent on importing fossil fuels and energy and what is earned from exporting energy products\u2014and a reduction in the surplus in the <\/span><b>machinery and vehicle<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> sector. <\/span><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">More specifically, between January and April 2026, the eurozone recorded a surplus of \u20ac12.9 billion, compared with \u20ac63.7 billion in the same period the previous year. European exports fell to \u20ac970.1 billion (-3.6 per cent compared to the January\u2013April 2025 period), and imports rose to \u20ac957.2 billion (+1.5 per cent). Credits: Eurostat<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The data also show that in April 2026 the EU\u2019s trade balance (which also includes the six countries that have not adopted the euro as their currency, namely Denmark, Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania, Sweden, and Hungary outside the Union) recorded a deficit of \u20ac7.1 billion in trade in goods with the rest of the world, compared with a surplus of \u20ac2.3 billion in March 2026 and a surplus of \u20ac7.3 billion in April 2025. This change reflects a deterioration of \u20ac14.4 billion year-on-year, mainly due to the same factors highlighted for the euro area (an increase in the energy deficit and a reduction in the surplus in the machinery and vehicles product group).&nbsp;Exports of goods to non-EU countries <\/span><strong>amounted to \u20ac225.7 billion (+3.2 per cent compared with April 2025), while&nbsp;<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>imports reached a value of \u20ac232.8 billion (+10.1 per cent)<\/strong><\/span>.<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">From January to April 2026, the EU also recorded a deficit of 2.2 billion, compared with a surplus of 57.5 billion between January and April 2025. During the same period, extra-EU exports of goods fell to 857.7 billion (-5.8 per cent compared to January\u2013April 2025), while imports rose to 859.9 billion (+0.8 per cent). Intra-EU trade, on the other hand, stood at 1,445.4 billion, marking a 4.2 per cent increase compared to 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">Analysing the EU\u2019s main products, <strong>the trade balance for the machinery and vehicles sector has almost halved<\/strong>, falling from 14.5 billion in 2025 to 7.1 billion in 2026, while it also declined for manufactured goods (from 32.3 to 22.7) and chemicals (from 20 to 18.4).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_456643\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Screenshot-2026-06-15-alle-12.18.35.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-456643 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Screenshot-2026-06-15-alle-12.18.35-1024x681.png\" alt=\"EU international trade in goods. Credits: Eurostat<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\">\n<p><strong>Regarding relations with key global partners<\/strong>, data for April 2026 show that the trade surplus with the United States has almost halved, falling from 17.1 billion to 9.9 billion, with exports down by 12.6 per cent and imports up by 3.9 per cent. The balance with China remains negative, with the deficit worsening by a further 2.9 billion compared with April 2025 (from 29 billion to 31.9 billion): exports to Beijing grew by 1.8 per cent and imports by 7.1 per cent.
