Brussels – <\/span> Economic imbalances, the trade deficit with China, the war in Ukraine and the Middle East. <\/b>These are the European Union\u2019s priorities reiterated<\/a> by the President of the European Commission, <\/span>Ursula von der Leyen<\/b>, and the President of the European Council, Ant\u00f3nio Costa<\/b>, at the press conference opening the <\/span>G7 summit<\/span><\/a> today (15 June) in Evian, France. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Having gathered \u201cagainst a backdrop of geopolitical fragmentation, economic restructuring, and rapid technological change,\u201d the leaders of France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, the United States of America, Canada, Japan and the European Union will first and foremost have to address, according to the President, the issue of the \u201cglobal economic imbalance.\u201d For von der Leyen, the situation in which \u201csome countries produce too much and do not consume enough, and vice versa<\/strong><\/span>,\u201d creates \u201cincreasingly dangerous dynamics\u201d that have led to \u201call Member States recording a trade deficit with China for the first time,\u201d and not only. For von der Leyen, the solution is \u201cvery clear\u201d and always the same: to reduce risk without \u201cdecoupling\u201d entirely from Beijing. “<\/span>To do this, we need to engage in dialogue with China, work on our internal potential within the EU and collaborate with trusted partners around the world,” she explained, noting that “through the <\/span>Global Gateway<\/b>, the EU works with countries that have natural resources” for precisely this reason. <\/span>Following von der Leyen\u2019s lead, President<\/span> Costa<\/b> has emphasised<\/a> that it is necessary for the economies at the summit to “strengthen our investment capacity to be more competitive and more self-sufficient,” so it will be important to work “closely with our global partners.” <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking in Evian, von der Leyen welcomed the agreement between Iran and the US, stating that a priority for the G7 will be its implementation <\/strong><\/span>and the restoration of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. The President also emphasised that the agreement \u201cshould pave the way for broader talks and lead to the end of Iran\u2019s nuclear and ballistic programmes,\u201d but that \u201cthere can be no lasting peace while Lebanon remains in flames<\/strong><\/span>.\u201d For this reason, the President called for \u201ca genuine ceasefire and full respect for Lebanon\u2019s sovereignty<\/strong><\/span>.\u201d On this point, Costa also mentioned \u201cthe dramatic humanitarian situation in Gaza and the grave concern over the expansion of illegal settlements in the West Bank,\u201d emphasising that “<\/span>for a just and lasting peace in the region, we must proceed along the only viable path, <\/strong>namely the two-state solution<\/strong><\/span>.” <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

On the subject of the war in Ukraine, von der Leyen referred to “the \u20ac90 billion loan package provided by the EU, which covers two-thirds of Ukraine\u2019s financial needs” and, in announcing the first disbursement scheduled for the end of the month, the President called on “Ukraine\u2019s other partners to step up<\/strong><\/span>.” <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
