{"id":456804,"date":"2026-06-15T19:28:53","date_gmt":"2026-06-15T17:28:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2026\/06\/15\/il-deficit-commerciale-con-la-cina-le-guerre-in-ucraina-e-medio-oriente-lue-ribadisce-le-sue-priorita-al-g7-di-evian\/"},"modified":"2026-06-15T19:44:52","modified_gmt":"2026-06-15T17:44:52","slug":"the-trade-deficit-with-china-the-wars-in-ukraine-and-the-middle-east-the-eu-reiterates-its-priorities-at-the-g7-summit-in-evian","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2026\/06\/15\/the-trade-deficit-with-china-the-wars-in-ukraine-and-the-middle-east-the-eu-reiterates-its-priorities-at-the-g7-summit-in-evian\/","title":{"rendered":"The trade deficit with China, the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East: the EU reiterates its priorities at the G7 summit in Evian"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brussels &#8211; <\/span><b> Economic imbalances, the trade deficit with China, the war in Ukraine and the Middle East. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These are the European Union\u2019s priorities <a href=\"https:\/\/audiovisual.ec.europa.eu\/en\/media\/video\/I-291286\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reiterated<\/a> by the President of the European Commission, <\/span><b>Ursula von der Leyen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and the President of the European Council, <b>Ant\u00f3nio Costa<\/b>, at the press conference opening the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2026\/06\/12\/macroeconomic-imbalances-ukraine-and-the-middle-east-the-key-issues-at-the-g7-summit-in-evian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">G7 summit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> today (15 June) in Evian, France.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Having gathered \u201cagainst a backdrop of geopolitical fragmentation, economic restructuring, and rapid technological change,\u201d the leaders of France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, the United States of America, Canada, Japan and the European Union will first and foremost have to address, according to the President, the issue of the \u201cglobal economic imbalance.\u201d For von der Leyen, the situation in which \u201c<strong>some countries produce too much and do not consume enough, and vice versa<\/strong><\/span>,<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d creates \u201cincreasingly dangerous dynamics\u201d that have led to \u201call Member States recording a trade deficit with China for the first time,\u201d and not only. For von der Leyen, the solution is \u201cvery clear\u201d and always the same: to reduce risk without \u201cdecoupling\u201d entirely from Beijing. &#8220;<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">To do this, we need to engage in dialogue with China, work on our internal potential within the EU and collaborate with trusted partners around the world,&#8221; she explained, noting that &#8220;through the <\/span><b class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Global Gateway<\/b><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">, the EU works with countries that have natural resources&#8221; for precisely this reason.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Following von der Leyen\u2019s lead, President<\/span><b> Costa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> has <a href=\"https:\/\/audiovisual.ec.europa.eu\/en\/media\/video\/I-290910\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">emphasised<\/a> that it is necessary for the economies at the summit to &#8220;strengthen our investment capacity to be more competitive and more self-sufficient,&#8221; so it will be important to work &#8220;closely with our global partners.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Speaking in Evian, von der Leyen welcomed the agreement between Iran and the US, stating that <strong>a priority for the G7 will be its implementation <\/strong><\/span>and the restoration of<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
