One of the EU\u2019s key political issues resurfaces"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels &#8211; <strong>Climate refugees,<\/strong> an issue that remains all too topical and yet <strong>lacks future-proof measures<\/strong>. The European Parliament\u2019s Research Service has updated data on a phenomenon that has never really been addressed, in an attempt to provide a brand-new tool for MEPs, who face a situation that has not only persisted but has not even been halted. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/thinktank\/en\/document\/EPRS_BRI(2021)698753\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">working document<\/a> points out that, according to figures from the <span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"it\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.internal-displacement.org\/global-report\/grid2025\/#:~:text=There%20were%2065.8%20million%20internal,efforts%20to%20rebuild%20their%20lives.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IDMC<\/a>), <\/span><\/span><\/span><strong>in 2024 alone<\/strong> <span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"it\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">65.8 million new displacements were recorded globally, and <strong>45.8 million of these people were forced to move due to floods, windstorms, earthquakes or droughts<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"it\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">These figures sound the alarm, as \u201cthis is the highest annual figure ever recorded by the IDMC,\u201d it is noted, amounting to \u201c<strong>almost double the annual average of the last decade<\/strong>.&#8221; Not only that: &#8220;Overall, <strong>weather events linked to climate change accounted for 99.5 per cent of all disaster-related displacements<\/strong> in 2024,\u201d demonstrating and confirming that \u201cthe climate change currently underway is set to generate an increasing number of &#8216;climate refugees'&#8221;.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"> Forecasts indicate that, unless action is taken, &#8220;<strong>by 2050, 216 million people across the world\u2019s six continents could be forced to move<\/strong> internally.&#8221; These are known as internally displaced persons, climate refugees within their own country or region.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-align: inherit\">At first glance, the situation appears to have improved only slightly, given that ten years ago, the then President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit\">Juncker, warned of the risk of 250 million climate refugees by 2050<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit\">.<\/span><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>Small consolation, then, if the number of internally displaced persons were to end up being &#8220;only&#8221; 216 million. But beware, as figures from the<span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"it\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">&nbsp;International Organisation for Migration (IOM) indicate that <strong>in the decade 2014\u20132024, extreme weather events caused 218 million internal displacements<\/strong>. In essence, these figures are already an established reality.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>EU policymakers are therefore being urged once again to tackle the problem seriously and without delay. &#8220;By<span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"it\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">&nbsp;the end of 2023, 75 per cent of forcibly displaced people were living in countries with high to extreme exposure to climate risks,\u201d notes the document from the European Parliament\u2019s think tank.<\/span><\/span> &#8220;<span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">As <strong>the number of people affected is expected to double by 2050, it is necessary to adequately address the problem<\/strong> of the annual displacement of millions of people worldwide due to environmental disasters,&#8221; it emphasises.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A total of 45.8 million internally displaced persons in a single year, and the outlook is not promising: 214 million between 2014 and 2024, and the figures could double.
