The European Commission is determined to stand its ground, even in the face of the repercussions of the US and Israeli war in Iran on energy prices.&nbsp;It is the European Commissioner for Climate Action, <strong>Wopke Hoekstra<\/strong>, who has dispelled any doubts and speculation in response to the European Parliament&#8217;s requests for clarification.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fabio De Masi<\/strong>, a German MEP sitting as an independent, claims in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/doceo\/document\/E-10-2026-000986_EN.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">parliamentary question<\/a> that oil prices \u201chave skyrocketed\u201d as a result of the war in Iran. Added to this is the risk of <span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"it\"><span class=\"jCAhz JpY6Fd\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">reduction in liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, which \u201ccould cause further price shocks in the European energy market.\u201d Faced with this situation, \u201cis the Commission reconsidering its decision to end energy supplies from Russia?<\/span><\/span><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"lRu31\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<div class=\"OvtS8d\">This is where Hoekstra\u2019s response comes in: &#8220;<span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"it\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The Commission believes that <strong>the EU must continue along the path it has taken<\/strong> with its long-term strategy of diversification, decarbonisation, and the phasing out of Russian fossil fuels.&#8221;<\/span><\/span> In this regard, he emphasises, \u201c<strong>to&nbsp;<\/strong><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><strong>abandon it would make the EU more dependent, more vulnerable, and weaker<\/strong>.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div>So, no concessions to Moscow and full steam ahead with the ban on Russian oil and gas imports. The Climate Commissioner\u2019s response could not have been clearer. Faced with the risk of energy shocks in the form of supply disruptions and soaring bills, the EU executive is nevertheless open to exploring measures that could facilitate purchases from other third countries: on 18 March this year, Hoekstra recalls, precisely in response to the <span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"it\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">conflict in the Middle East and its impact on global energy markets, \u201cthe Commission published an&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/energy.ec.europa.eu\/news\/commission-publishes-updated-guidance-repowereu-gas-regulation-2026-03-18_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>updated guidance<\/b><\/a>&nbsp;<span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"it\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">on the implementation of the RepowerEU Regulation, with a view to <strong>reducing any unnecessary barriers to imports of non-Russian gas into the EU<\/strong>\u201d. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"it\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Yes to foreign gas, but no to Gazprom\u2019s: this is the European Commission\u2019s stance and policy in response to the repercussions of the war in Iran and to remain true to its anti-Russian rhetoric and actions.
