Members set out the priorities for the next multiannual financial framework, which \u201cwill determine Europe\u2019s capacity to act in the years to come,\u201d said L\u00f6fven. <strong>At a time of geopolitical uncertainty, economic transformation, and growing social challenges, Europe needs a budget that works for the people<\/strong>:&nbsp; one that invests in quality jobs, cohesion, affordable housing, public services. and education.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The main objectives, in addition to setting the budget priorities, are \u201cto ensure strong economies,\u201d he added, \u201cby stimulating sustainable competitiveness, and to strengthen Europe\u2019s position in the world by enhancing security and preparedness, protecting critical infrastructure, and supporting Ukraine and other crisis-hit regions.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The leader of the Socialists and Democrats group in the European Parliament,<strong> Iratxe Garcia P\u00e9rez<\/strong>, stressed the importance of sending a strong message regarding Ukraine. \u201cIt is essential to send a message of unity,\u201d she said. <strong> \u201cOur unity is our strongest argument; Russia must accept this and come to the negotiating table<\/strong>.\u201d<\/span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On the conflict in the Middle East, Garcia P\u00e9rez reiterated the group\u2019s stance: \u201cWe welcome the agreement between the United States and Iran, but we must be clear. The agreement simply takes us back to the situation prior to the war.\u201d On the Multiannual Financial Framework, Garcia P\u00e9rez rejected the Cypriot Presidency\u2019s proposal, because \u201cit is not enough. The European budget must be able to respond to new policies \u2013 defence and competitiveness \u2013 without neglecting other priorities.\u201d<\/span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Harsh words were also directed at the handling of returns.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2026\/06\/17\/parliament-gives-the-green-light-to-the-return-regulation-the-peoples-party-and-the-far-right-join-forces\/\"> Yesterday, the European Parliament<\/a> approved the new regulation, which, according to Garc\u00eda P\u00e9rez,, must not \u201cbecome the new face of Europe.\u201d <strong>Elly Schlein<\/strong>, secretary of the Democratic Party, expressed a similar view. \u201c<strong>Not only are we sending people away, violating their fundamental rights, but we are also importing Trump\u2019s ICE model.<\/strong>\u201d According to Schlein, this represents \u201can incredible step backwards.\u201d The secretary finds it \u201ccurious to see the Italian government celebrating the fact that the debate in Europe on solidarity between states regarding reception has disappeared.\u201d The regulation, in fact, \u201cwill leave border countries more exposed and with greater responsibilities.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Among the proposals put forward at the European level by the PD leader is a European CERN for artificial intelligence. <\/strong><\/span>\u201cNo single country can bridge the gap with China and the United States on its own,\u201d she explained. \u201cThere is strength in unity.\u201d A European model of innovation, she emphasised, is the only alternative to the Silicon Valley model, \u201cwhich is entirely profit-driven and concentrates power, wealth, and data in ever fewer hands.\u201d<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong> Following her meetings with von der Leyen and Costa, Schlein reiterated her priorities: no cuts to cohesion funds and no centralisation at the expense of local authorities and regions. <\/strong><\/span>Finally, on the war in Ukraine, she called for a single European negotiator, because \u201cwe need a voice that speaks on behalf of all 27 Member States, without leaving this space to Trump.\u201d<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The PES Presidency met in Brussels shortly before the start of the European Council.
