{"id":457664,"date":"2026-06-23T11:40:40","date_gmt":"2026-06-23T09:40:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2026\/06\/23\/kadis-il-settore-della-pesca-europeo-si-trova-a-un-bivio-critico\/"},"modified":"2026-06-23T12:28:49","modified_gmt":"2026-06-23T10:28:49","slug":"kadis-the-european-fishing-industry-stands-at-a-critical-juncture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2026\/06\/23\/kadis-the-european-fishing-industry-stands-at-a-critical-juncture\/","title":{"rendered":"Kadis: &#8220;The European fishing industry stands at a critical juncture&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brussels \u2013 The European fisheries sector is at \u201ca critical juncture\u201d and, despite \u201creal progress since 2013\u201d and \u201cmore stocks are being fished sustainably,\u201d the Commissioner believes \u201cwe are not there yet.\u201d The alarm was sounded at yesterday\u2019s (22 June) Agriculture and Fisheries Council in Luxembourg by the European Commissioner for Fisheries and the Oceans, <strong>Costa Kadis<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Common Fisheries Policy, sustainability, and the Regulation on the conditions for EU support for fisheries, aquaculture, and maritime affairs for the period 2028\u20132034 were the topics <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/meetings\/agrifish\/2026\/06\/22-23\/?utm_source=brevo&amp;utm_campaign=AUTOMATED%20-%20Alert%20-%20Newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_id=3318\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">discussed and covered<\/a> at the meeting, during which the European Commission presented its annual communication on the state of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) and the guidelines for 2027. With the launch of the annual process for setting quotas and total allowable catches (TACs) \u2013 the maximum quantities of specific fish stocks that may be caught \u2013 the fisheries ministers of the Member States assessed the Commission\u2019s proposals and outlined their national priorities for the coming year. \u201c<strong>Ministers raised the issues that matter most to them. Predictability and stability. Including through multiannual cash limits. Simplification, fleet modernisation, and decarbonisation. Generational renewal and the future of aquaculture,<\/strong>\u201d Kadis&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/audiovisual.ec.europa.eu\/en\/media\/video\/I-291787\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a><strong><\/strong>&nbsp;in a press conference at the end of the meeting, stressing that the Commission shares these concerns.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With regard to sustainable fisheries in the EU, the conclusions of the Agrifish Council highlighted <strong>\u201ccontinued progress towards sustainable fisheries, with fishing pressure declining in many sea basins and more fish stocks being managed at sustainable levels.\u201d <\/strong>However, Kadis presented a more negative picture: \u201c<strong>The&nbsp;<\/strong><\/span><b>European fisheries sector is at a critical juncture\u201d <\/b>and despite<b> &nbsp;\u201creal progress since 2013\u201d and \u201cmore stocks are being fished sustainably,<\/b>\u201d the Commissioner<b> believes \u201cwe are not there yet.\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Among the challenges highlighted are \u201cthe slow recovery of certain stocks, particularly in the Baltic Sea, the Mediterranean, and the Black Sea, and the impacts of climate change, environmental degradation, and market volatility\u201d. The Commission has therefore emphasised \u201cthe need to continue basing fishing opportunities on the best available scientific advice, while supporting the sector\u2019s resilience, competitiveness and long-term profitability.\u201d Other issues raised during the meeting included \u201cstock recovery, fleet capacity, the implementation of the landing obligation, the energy transition, and the socio-economic outlook for fisheries in the EU\u201d.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In addition to sustainable fishing, the ministers exchanged views on the evaluation of the regulation on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/policies\/common-fisheries-policy-and-its-goals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Common Fisheries Policy (CFP)<\/a>, the EU regulatory framework which<\/span> aims to ensure that fishing and aquaculture activities are managed in an environmentally sustainable manner, to help fishing communities enjoy a fair standard of living, and to provide a healthy source of food at reasonable prices. <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The ministers discussed how to ensure that the CFP \u201cdelivers effectively and in a balanced way across its environmental, economic and social objectives improving the practical implementation and workability of the policy\u201d and \u201cremains sufficiently adaptable to future challenges and evolving realities.\u201d<\/span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>The Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU also provided an update on the status of the regulation setting out the conditions for EU support for fisheries, aquaculture, and maritime policy for the period 2028\u20132034.<\/strong> The proposed regulation forms part of the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) and sets out in detail the conditions for EU support for the common fisheries policy and related sectors.
