The European Central Bank and the Central Bank of Iceland (Se\u00f0labanki \u00cdslands) have signed an agreement allowing for ECB payments to be settled instantly in Icelandic kr\u00f3na&nbsp;from 2028. Under this agreement, the Icelandic kr\u00f3na will become the fifth currency available for the instant settlement of retail payments using the Eurosystem\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecb.europa.eu\/paym\/target\/tips\/html\/index.en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TIPS<\/a> services. The euro, the Swedish kr\u00f3na&nbsp;and the Danish kr\u00f3na&nbsp;are already available for settling payments in TIPS, while the Norwegian kr\u00f3na&nbsp;is expected to join in 2028.&nbsp;The move seems to confirm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2026\/02\/23\/iceland-moves-toward-eu-referendum-with-a-vote-to-open-talks-possible-as-early-as-august\/\">Reykjavik\u2019s renewed shift toward the EU<\/a>, whose single currency is the euro<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&#8220;We are delighted that more and more European countries, including from outside the European Union, are joining the Eurosystem\u2019s TARGET Services,\u201d said ECB President <strong>Christine Lagarde.<\/strong>&nbsp;\u201cThis reinforces the integration of Europe\u2019s financial infrastructures, supports its strategic autonomy, brings economies of scale and strengthens economic relations.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Agreement signed between the European Central Bank and the Central Bank of Iceland: the Icelandic kr\u00f3na to be usable from 2028.
