It is around these three thematic areas that Ireland is structuring its <a href=\"https:\/\/irish-presidency.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rotating presidency<\/a> of the Council of the EU, which begins on 1 July. \u201cThroughout our term, we will work to make the Union more prosperous and safer, and to defend our shared fundamental values,\u201d assures the Irish Prime Minister, <strong>Miche\u00e1l Martin<\/strong>,&nbsp;in support of a political agenda that is largely centred on the agreement on the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF 2028\u20132034). <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"it\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The main challenge facing Ireland\u2019s eighth presidency of the Council of the EU is to try to finalise an agreement by the end of 2026 on one of the most divisive issues by definition. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2026\/06\/19\/multi-annual-budget-october-will-be-the-moment-of-truth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU heads of state and government have already given the Irish Presidency, even before it took office, a clear mandate to bring everyone on board<\/a>,&nbsp;and this will be the central theme of these six months. <strong>The Multiannual Financial Framework must secure&nbsp;the resources to fund&nbsp;&#8220;twelve-star&#8221; competitiveness<\/strong> from industrial, commercial, and technological perspectives.&nbsp;But the 2028\u20132034 budget must also guarantee security in every sense of the word, from defence and energy to employment, housing, the internet, and health.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2026\/06\/18\/the-multiannual-budget-its-not-just-about-divisions-within-the-eu-theres-also-the-spectre-of-the-2027-elections\/\">https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2026\/06\/18\/the-multiannual-budget-its-not-just-about-divisions-within-the-eu-theres-also-the-spectre-of-the-2027-elections\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"it\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">But competitiveness, values and security depend on reforms. The Irish Presidency intends to implement the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2026\/03\/20\/simplification-and-removal-of-barriers-leaders-approve-the-eus-competitiveness-agenda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;One Europe, One Single Market&#8217; roadmap<\/a>, which sets out the steps the EU must urgently take in areas such as simplification for businesses and citizens, the completion and strengthening of the single market, the reduction of energy prices, decarbonisation, and the development of artificial intelligence. To this end, the Presidency\u2019s programme provides for the reduction of unnecessary administrative burdens \u201c<strong>by prioritising the <\/strong>Omnibus simplification packages.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>With regard to energy competitiveness, the Irish government intends to finalise the approval process for the <span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"it\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"> European Networks Package and to drive forward the Energy Security Package, thereby ensuring a response to high energy prices. As part of this effort, a commitment has been made to \u201caccelerate the transition to clean energy and gradually phase out dependence on fossil fuel imports.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In terms of competitiveness, innovation, and technological security, the Irish Presidency intends to work towards an ambitious, clear, and structured European agenda through&nbsp;<span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"it\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><strong>the international summit on artificial intelligence scheduled to take place in Dublin on 14 October<\/strong>, which will focus on harnessing the opportunities offered by digital technology and artificial intelligence, while enabling&nbsp;citizens to thrive in the digital society.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"lRu31\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<div class=\"OvtS8d\">Furthermore, the Irish Presidency is convinced that &#8220;<span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"it\"><span class=\"jCAhz\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><strong>innovation in the healthcare sector<\/strong> will make a decisive contribution to Europe\u2019s competitiveness and technological leadership,\u201d as well as ensuring the health and safety of citizens.<\/span><\/span> To this end, the intention is<strong> to promote&nbsp;<\/strong><span class=\"jCAhz\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><strong>legislation on biotechnology and medical devices<\/strong> in a sector considered key to the&nbsp;European Union&#8217;s <span lang=\"it\" class=\"HwtZe\"><span class=\"jCAhz\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"> future<\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div>During the Dublin Presidency, &#8220;<strong>we will continue&nbsp;<\/strong><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"it\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><strong>to offer unwavering support to Ukraine,<\/strong>\u201d assures Prime Minister Martin, who reiterates that his government\u2019s mandate over the next six months will also be focused on enlargement: \u201c<strong>We will support countries wishing to join the European Union on their path to accession<\/strong>, helping to ensure greater prosperity and stability in our region.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Irish Presidency begins on 1 July.
