{"id":458647,"date":"2026-07-01T19:07:54","date_gmt":"2026-07-01T17:07:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2026\/07\/01\/forza-nellunita-il-motto-e-monito-della-presidenza-irlandese-del-consiglio-ue\/"},"modified":"2026-07-01T19:38:50","modified_gmt":"2026-07-01T17:38:50","slug":"strength-with-unity-the-motto-and-reminder-of-the-irish-presidency-of-the-eu-council","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2026\/07\/01\/strength-with-unity-the-motto-and-reminder-of-the-irish-presidency-of-the-eu-council\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Strength with unity&#8221;: the motto\u2014and reminder\u2014of the Irish Presidency of the EU Council"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brussels \u2013 <strong>Improving Europe\u2019s competitiveness and productivity, supporting Ukraine and peace in the Middle East, and bringing closer those countries that aspire to become members of the European Union.<\/strong> These are the objectives <a href=\"https:\/\/audiovisual.ec.europa.eu\/en\/media\/video\/I-292247\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">set out<\/a> today (1 July) in Dublin by the Irish Prime Minister <\/span><b>Miche\u00e1l Martin. <\/b>Until 31 December, the country will hold <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union, a central role \u201cin shaping the decisions that affect the lives of every citizen of our Union,\u201d the Irish Prime Minister emphasised.&nbsp;<\/span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span>During the inauguration ceremony, Martin was flanked by the President of the European Council, <strong>Ant\u00f3nio Costa<\/strong>, as they will be working together over the next six months on what has been described as the Union\u2019s \u201c<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">challenging agenda.\u201d \u201cOver the next six months, Ireland will lead the Council\u2019s work, acting in the interests of 450 million European citizens. The motto of your presidency is extremely clear: \u2018Strength with&nbsp;Unity\u2019 \u2013 together we are stronger,\u201d Costa emphasised in his speech at the ceremony. \u201cValues, competitiveness, and security are the three pillars of your presidency\u2019s programme. They are also key priorities for our Union,\u201d he added.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span>On the issue of competitiveness, it will be necessary to press ahead with the &#8220;One Europe, One Market&#8221; agenda, while on the matter of security, the &#8220;complex global geopolitical context&#8221; in which the continent currently finds itself will continue to prevail. <strong>In navigating \u201cthese difficult waters,\u201d Costa explained, \u201cthe European Union has a compass and a map, namely international law, multilateralism, and the rules-based international order,\u201d and these principles will underpin European support for Kyiv<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Present in Dublin alongside Costa for the launch of the Irish Presidency, the President of Ukraine,<strong> Volodymyr Zelensky<\/strong>, took the floor and <a href=\"https:\/\/audiovisual.ec.europa.eu\/en\/media\/video\/I-292249\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">added<\/a> that Kyiv hopes for \u201cconcrete progress on the drone agreement\u201d proposed by Ukraine to the EU, following \u201ca significant number of bilateral agreements and broader partnerships with European countries that can help spread Ukraine\u2019s new defence technologies.\u201d In the near future, the Ukrainian leader added, it will also be necessary to \u201cmake it more difficult for Russia to continue this war,\u201d both through \u201clong-range strikes against Russian military and oil infrastructure\u201d and \u201cmedium-range sanctions,\u201d as well as concluding negotiations on Ukraine\u2019s accession to the EU \u201cin a concrete manner.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span>Turning to the Middle East, Costa reiterated that \u201c<strong>the same values and principles must guide the European Union\u2019s positions and actions for peace and security in Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, Iran, the Strait of Hormuz, and throughout the wider Middle East<\/strong>\u201d and that \u201cthe only possible path to lasting peace in the region\u201d is the \u201ctwo-state solution\u201d whereby, in accordance \u201cwith the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions,\u201d the \u201ctwo democratic states, Israel and Palestine, live side by side in peace and within secure and recognised borders.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span>Finally, the key issue for the Irish Presidency: reaching a consensus on the Union\u2019s next multiannual budget. \u201cOur main common challenge\u201d\u2014as Costa described the future Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF)\u2014on which an agreement must be reached by the end of the year. \u201cNot just any budget, but one that has the necessary resources to meet our citizens\u2019 expectations,\u201d the Portuguese official noted.
