Rutte: &#8220;Governments must present clear, concrete, and credible plans to meet the 5 per cent target&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels &#8211; <strong>Upholding the Transatlantic Alliance\u2019s commitments, ensuring fair burden-sharing, transforming resources into capabilities, and continuing support for Ukraine.<\/strong> These are the priorities <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nato.int\/en\/news-and-events\/events\/event-programmes\/2026\/07\/nato-summit-2026#tabs-20295ffe50-item-d8305c4d79-tab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">set out<\/a> in Ankara (Turkey) by the NATO Secretary General, <strong>Mark Rutte<\/strong>, during the press conference ahead of the Atlantic Alliance summit beginning tomorrow (7 July). Over two days, the Allied nations will discuss not only increasing military spending but also how they intend to meet the target of 5 per cent of GDP by 2035, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2026\/05\/22\/nato-rutte-us-withdrawal-is-inevitable-greater-european-investment-is-essential\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">commitment<\/a> to which Italy is also a signatory.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Just one year on, we are already seeing extraordinary progress,&#8221; said Rutte, who now expects &#8220;clear, concrete, and credible plans to achieve the 5 per cent target&#8221; from governments. On this point,<strong> the Secretary-General commended the European Allies and Canada, as they are currently \u201calready investing around 4 per cent of their GDP in defence and security,\u201d an increase of almost 20 per cent in defence spending compared with last year, amounting to approximately $258 billion<\/strong>. For this reason, according to the Secretary-General, they are \u201con track to bring their defence spending in line with that of the United States.\u201d In addition to spending, the Allies\u2019 efforts \u201cto strengthen our deterrence and defence, including along the entire eastern flank in the Baltic region and the Arctic\u201d and in Ukraine were recognised.  This, he noted, \u201cdemonstrates a real shift in mindset.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The aim now is to \u201ctranslate our economic strength into military capabilities.\u201d In short, this means ensuring greater innovation, overcoming the fragmentation of national defence industries, and streamlining bureaucracy.
