{"id":459357,"date":"2026-07-09T10:59:36","date_gmt":"2026-07-09T08:59:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2026\/07\/09\/clientearth-contro-il-belgio-il-paese-con-piu-pfas-in-europa-lo-sa-e-non-agisce\/"},"modified":"2026-07-09T11:50:37","modified_gmt":"2026-07-09T09:50:37","slug":"clientearth-against-belgium-the-country-with-the-most-pfas-in-europe-knows-it-and-isnt-acting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2026\/07\/09\/clientearth-against-belgium-the-country-with-the-most-pfas-in-europe-knows-it-and-isnt-acting\/","title":{"rendered":"ClientEarth against Belgium: the country with the most PFAS in Europe knows it, and isn\u2019t acting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brussels \u2013 \u201cBelgium is home to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/feb\/23\/revealed-scale-of-forever-chemical-pollution-across-uk-and-europe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">highest levels<\/a>&nbsp;of PFAS pollution in Europe \u2013 and&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;poisoning entire communities and workplaces,\u201d&nbsp;<span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clientearth.org\/latest\/news\/we-re-taking-legal-action-against-forever-chemicals-in-belgium\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">warns <\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>ClientEarth, a non-profit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clientearth.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">organisation<\/a> of legal experts defending the environment,<span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;which accuses the<\/span><\/span>&nbsp;Belgian government of failing to tackle pollution. \u201c<strong>We\u2019ve&nbsp;launched a landmark human rights legal complaint against the Belgian government over its failure to tackle this pollution and protect citizens\u2019 rights to health.&nbsp; <\/strong><\/span>We want to force Belgium to adopt stronger measures to stop ongoing pollution and better protect communities across the country,\u201d&nbsp;the non-profit organisation said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span>Among the most polluted sites in Belgium are: <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the area defined as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.env-health.org\/banpfas\/#belgium\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><font>3M plant<\/font><\/span>&nbsp;<\/a><\/span>&nbsp;<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in Flanders, where PFAS are believed to have been produced from the 1970s until 2024 and where, in 2001, levels were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.env-health.org\/banpfas\/#belgium\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported to be thousands of times<\/a>&nbsp;above<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> safety levels; another <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vito.be\/en\/news\/study-youngsters-near-3m-confirms-health-impact-pfas-exposure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><font>plant<\/font> <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in Flanders; and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vito.be\/en\/news\/study-youngsters-near-3m-confirms-health-impact-pfas-exposure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">una base<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rtbf.be\/article\/chievres-12-000-habitants-ont-bu-une-eau-contaminee-aux-pfas-des-prises-de-sang-revelent-une-forte-contamination-11283476\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an air force base in Wallonia<\/a>; and even<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;in&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rtbf.be\/article\/pfas-les-concentrations-de-tfa-dans-l-eau-des-bruxellois-depassent-la-future-norme-europeenne-11453049\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><font>tap water in Brussels that has been found to be contaminated<\/font>.<\/span><\/a>&nbsp;<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to investigative reports, <\/span><strong>in 2017, the US military had already identified contamination in the local water supply and alerted the Belgian authorities, who, however, did not inform the public.<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Consequently, residents were not informed and only learned years later, thanks to media investigations. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span><strong>The lawyers argue that the country is&nbsp;violating the right to health enshrined in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coe.int\/en\/web\/conventions\/full-list?module=treaty-detail&amp;treatynum=163\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Social Charter<\/a> (Article 11), as \u201cthe government\u2019s systemic failure has resulted in public health and the environment being harmed, and children disproportionately so.<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d They have therefore lodged a complaint with the European Committee of Social Rights (ECSR), a legal mechanism that allows trade unions, employers, and non-governmental organisations to report violations of the principles of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coe.int\/en\/web\/european-social-charter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2060Charter. <\/a>&#8220;<\/span><strong>While the European Committee of Social Rights cannot impose fines, its decisions carry significant political and legal weight<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and have previously led governments across Europe to change laws and public policies,\u201d said ClientEarth\u2019s lawyers. \u201cThe solution is simple: the government needs to ban all PFAS as soon as&nbsp;possible,\u201d said ClientEarth\u2019s lawyer, <strong>H\u00e9l\u00e8ne Duguy<\/strong>.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\"><span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a family of over 10,000 synthetic chemical compounds that have been used since the 1950s to make products water-repellent, grease-resistant, and heat-resistant. They are known as <\/span><b>\u201cforever chemicals\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> because they do not break down naturally and accumulate in the environment and in the human body.
