The Council of the EU has approved the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2026\/06\/26\/european-commission-proposes-to-extend-temporary-protection-for-ukrainian-refugees-until-2028\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">proposal presented by the European Commission at the end of June<\/a>, in the belief that \u201c<span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"it\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">extending protection for a further year will provide clarity and predictability for all those fleeing the war,&#8221;&nbsp;<strong>Jim O\u2019Callaghan<\/strong>, Ireland\u2019s Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration, <a href=\"https:\/\/irish-presidency.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the country holding the rotating presidency<\/a> of the EU Council, said. \u201c<strong>The message is clear: we continue to support Ukraine<\/strong>\u201d, he stressed. He then adds: \u201cAs part of our support, we also want to make sure Ukraine can defend itself. This is why our temporary protection scheme respects Ukraine\u2019s legitimate needs.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"it\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The Council of the EU is effectively introducing changes to the granting of temporary protection status. This means that, given Ukraine\u2019s changing defence needs, <strong>from now on, temporary protection will only be granted to those who fulfil their military obligations in Ukraine<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">This restriction will apply only to new applicants for temporary protection and not to those already benefiting from such protection in the EU.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"it\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">In practice, from now on,&nbsp;to obtain temporary protection, people displaced from Ukraine will have to prove&nbsp;compliance with their military service obligations, for&nbsp;example, by presenting a passport bearing an exit stamp issued by the Ukrainian authorities certifying their legal departure from Ukraine.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Alternatively, they could present a document, either in paper or electronic form, confirming their exemption from or fulfilment of military obligations.<\/span><\/span><\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"it\"><span class=\"jCAhz JxVs2d ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The EU activated the <a href=\"https:\/\/home-affairs.ec.europa.eu\/policies\/migration-and-asylum\/asylum-eu\/temporary-protection_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Temporary Protection Directive<\/a> on 4 March 2022 by a unanimous decision of the Member States, and it was automatically extended by one year. The first extension to March 2024 was approved in October 2022, and another extension to 4 March 2025 was approved in September 2023. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/11\/eu-commission-extend-temporary-protection-to-ukrainians-until-march-4-2026\/\">June 2024, there was a proposal to extend the deadline further until 4 March 2026<\/a>, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/press\/press-releases\/2025\/06\/13\/eu-member-states-agree-to-extend-temporary-protection-for-refugees-from-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on 13 June 2025,<\/a> the European Council adopted a decision to extend temporary protection from 4 March 2026 to 4 March 2027. Today (15 July) marks the final stage in the process of protecting Ukrainian citizens fleeing the war.<\/p>\n<p>\u200b<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Council introduces a requirement to verify compliance with military service obligations.
