Lega MEPs <strong>Anna Maria Cisint, Paolo Borchia, and Silvia Sardone<\/strong>, from the Patriots for Europe (PfE) group, have tabled a parliamentary question to the Executive Vice-President responsible for Industry, St\u00e9phane S\u00e9journ\u00e9, <strong>in which they link the matter to the \u201ccontradictions\u201d in the European Union\u2019s industrial policy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/doceo\/document\/P-10-2026-002120_EN.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In the parliamentary question<\/a>, the three MEPs criticise some of the instruments introduced by the EU to support the industrial transition, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/taxation-customs.ec.europa.eu\/carbon-border-adjustment-mechanism_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM)<\/a>, which&nbsp;imposes a cost on carbon emissions embedded in certain products imported from third countries. According to Cisint, Borchia, and Sardone, measures such as the CBAM, which \u201c<strong>are intended to safeguard the competitiveness of EU industries vis-\u00e0-vis third countries<\/strong>,\u201d are instead \u201c<strong>emblematic of European contradictions within regulatory frameworks<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Lega representatives are therefore asking the Commission <strong>whether the European funding received by Electrolux was conditional on the company\u2019s commitment<\/strong> <strong>to safeguard jobs<\/strong> and maintain production capacity, and whether Brussels intends to review EU environmental and industrial legislation to prevent \u201c<strong>further deindustrialisation of the European manufacturing sector<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/doceo\/document\/P-10-2026-002120-ASW_EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In the reply to the parliamentary question<\/a>, S\u00e9journ\u00e9 points out that \u201cElectrolux Italia has received EU funding for research and innovation under the <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/EN\/legal-content\/summary\/seventh-framework-programme-2007-to-2013.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Seventh Framework Programme<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/research-and-innovation.ec.europa.eu\/funding\/funding-opportunities\/funding-programmes-and-open-calls\/horizon-2020_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Horizon 2020<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/research-and-innovation.ec.europa.eu\/funding\/funding-opportunities\/funding-programmes-and-open-calls\/horizon-europe_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Horizon Europe<\/a>.\u201d However, she clarifies, \u201c<strong>the protection of jobs or the maintenance of production capacity are not eligibility or award criteria<\/strong>\u201d for European funds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">As for the regulatory framework, the Executive Vice-President <strong> implicitly rejects the idea of a rethink of European industrial strategy<\/strong>, emphasising instead that the Commission<strong> is already taking action to strengthen the competitiveness of industry<\/strong> without compromising the objectives of the green transition. Among the initiatives mentioned are the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/02\/26\/eu-unveils-its-clean-industrial-deal-to-drive-decarbonization-and-re-industrialization\/\">Clean Industrial Deal<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/single-market-economy.ec.europa.eu\/publications\/industrial-accelerator-act_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Industrial Accelerator Act<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/policies\/simplification\/\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the \u201cOmnibus\u201d simplification package<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">S\u00e9journ\u00e9 also points out that the Commission \u201chas put forward a proposal on legislation relating to energy products<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"><strong>&nbsp;to simplify further<\/strong><\/span><strong>&nbsp;certain energy labelling rules for manufacturers of household appliances<\/strong>,\u201d including Electrolux. <\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Even on the CBAM, which MEPs have identified as one of the factors undermining the competitiveness of European businesses, the Commission is proud of the work it has carried out.
