{"id":460525,"date":"2026-07-20T16:45:16","date_gmt":"2026-07-20T14:45:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2026\/07\/20\/caldo-e-lavoro-i-sindacati-europei-tornano-a-chiedere-un-legge-sulle-temperature-massime\/"},"modified":"2026-07-20T17:13:18","modified_gmt":"2026-07-20T15:13:18","slug":"heat-and-work-european-trade-unions-are-once-again-calling-for-legislation-on-maximum-temperatures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2026\/07\/20\/heat-and-work-european-trade-unions-are-once-again-calling-for-legislation-on-maximum-temperatures\/","title":{"rendered":"Heat and work: European trade unions are once again calling for legislation on maximum temperatures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels \u2013 Heat and work: it is time for the European Union to consider these two issues together and draw up <strong>&#8220;a <\/strong><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"it\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><strong>European legislation on maximum working temperatures<\/strong> that guarantees all workers the right to paid breaks and ensures employers provide access to water, shade, and protective clothing.&#8221; This is the call from the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), which is once again raising the issue of working conditions in summer.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The ETUC draws inspiration from news reports and current affairs, which speak Italian: the strikes called by delivery riders in Milan, Florence, and Bologna against the platforms that force them&nbsp;to carry on with &#8220;business as usual&#8221;, when there is very little that is actually usual. &#8220;<strong>When<\/strong><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"it\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><strong> temperatures exceed 38 degrees, the likelihood of accidents at work increases by 10\u201315 per cent<\/strong>,\u201d reports the European Trade Union Confederation.<\/span><\/span> Not only that: \u201c<span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><strong>It is estimated that every year 277,000 accidents and 230 deaths are linked to heat stress in the workplace<\/strong>\u201d and, in light of this, \u201conly 15 per cent of workers say that measures have been taken to ensure their safety.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"it\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b C1N51c\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">\u201cWe are calling on politicians and employers to work with trade unions to organise work during periods of high temperatures in a sensible and safe manner,\u201d emphasises ETUC General Secretary, <strong>Esther Lynch<\/strong>, who insists: \u201c<span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><strong>Building competitiveness does not mean ignoring this issue<\/strong>, but tackling it through dialogue with trade unions at European, sectoral, and company level.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This is not a new call from the European Trade Union Confederation. On the contrary, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/07\/01\/killer-heat-european-trade-unions-call-for-legislation-to-protect-workers\/\">ETUC is reiterating its earlier calls<\/a> for measures to tackle a problem that can no longer be postponed.&nbsp;The idea of adjusting working patterns in line with maximum temperature limits, taking into account differences across sectors, is, for the ETUC, the new priority for the world of work. In a different way the European Central Bank had also suggested the introduction of heat-related measures to safeguard productivity and competitiveness.
