Brussels – The European Commission has given the go-ahead for <\/strong>300 million euros in state aid approved by Italy to support road transport companies<\/strong> against the rise in fuel prices due to the crisis in the Middle East<\/a>.<\/span><\/span> Compared with February 2026, diesel prices in Italy rose by 16.9 per cent in March 2026, by 23.3 per cent in April 2026, and by 18 per cent in May 2026.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 The aid introduced by the Meloni government will take the form of a tax credit \u2013 for example, against income tax, VAT, or social security contributions \u2013 which can be used to offset any taxes owed by the company to the government by 31 December 2026. For companies operating in the road transport sector with their registered or head office in Italy, the aid may cover up to 70 per cent of the additional fuel costs arising from the Middle East crisis for fuel purchased between March and June 2026.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 Following the examinations carried out, the Commission considers that the State aid scheme is necessary, appropriate, and proportionate to facilitate the development of an economic activity and does not adversely affect trading conditions to an extent contrary to the common interest.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
