Brussels \u2013 The banning of the Yabloko party, the last Russian opposition party not directly controlled by the state? \u201cIt essentially shows that Russia is afraid and therefore really needs to eliminate any dissenting voice<\/strong>.\u201d This is the European Commission\u2019s position on the ruling by the Moscow Supreme Court, which yesterday (10 August) barred the opposition party, and above all one opposed to Russia\u2019s war of aggression in Ukraine<\/strong>, Yabloko, from the parliamentary elections in September. <\/p>\n

During the daily press briefing, the European Commission spokesperson, Anita Hipper<\/strong>, underlined<\/a> that the ruling is nothing more than \u201cfurther evidence of Russia\u2019s actions against fundamental freedoms and its ongoing pressure on opposition figures.\u201d By silencing the political opposition, \u201cthe Kremlin is eliminating any internal voices critical of its unjustified war of aggression against Ukraine<\/strong>,\u201d she added, emphasising that this should be \u201ca surprise, but it is not.\u201d <\/p>\n

Criticism of the affair has also come from the European Democratic Party, which, on its social media channels, described<\/a> the decision as \u201cyet another attack on political pluralism and the democratic opposition.\u201d According to party representatives, \u201cPutin\u2019s regime\u201d fears any voice \u201ccalling for peace, freedom, and democracy.\u201d Therefore, Europe must stand alongside these voices<\/strong>. For the Democrats, this can only be achieved by increasing pressure on the Kremlin, imposing further targeted sanctions, and supporting those fighting for a free, peaceful, and democratic Russia. <\/p>\n
