In an interview <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/newsletter\/brussels-playbook\/the-cost-of-holding-the-front-line\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">with Politico<\/a>, Kulbergs explained that <strong>these funds should be allocated through the <a href=\"https:\/\/commission.europa.eu\/topics\/budget\/eu-budget-2028-2034-explained\/driving-prosperity-competitiveness-research-and-innovation_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Competitiveness Fund<\/a> as part of the <\/strong> <strong>upcoming long-term EU 2028-2034 budget (<a href=\"https:\/\/commission.europa.eu\/topics\/budget\/eu-budget-2028-2034-explained_it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MFF<\/a>).<\/strong> In particular, they would help cover both the increased costs incurred by the Latvian defence sector \u2013 given that the country shares a border with Russia and its airspace is constantly <strong><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ansa.it\/sito\/notizie\/mondo\/2026\/08\/14\/caccia-italiani-abbattono-in-lettonia-un-drone-probabilmente-ucraino_96617dd2-1d09-4ac6-8f49-02883796ca08.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">breached<\/a><strong><\/strong> \u2013 and the economic repercussions of severing ties with Moscow.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>The Prime Minister reiterated that the seven billion, together with the other funds allocated to Latvia, would account for almost half of the 15.12 billion euros in defence spending that the Riga government plans to spend over the same period. \u201c<strong>We are pushing our budget deficit to the limit and, with that debt, we are paying for the defence of the whole of Europe<\/strong>,\u201d Kulbergs also stated, pointing out that a large part of Latvia\u2019s spending \u201cgoes back west,\u201d through arms purchases from Germany, France, Spain, Sweden, and the Netherlands. In fact, \u201cwe fuel their economies\u201d, he added.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The issue of the costs incurred by Latvia in its standoff with Moscow is emerging in the broader context of the parliamentary elections scheduled for 3 October.&nbsp;At the helm of the right-wing, conservative party \u201cLatvia First\u201d, <strong class=\"rQesXe MPyX\"><strong>Ain\u0101rs \u0160lesers <\/strong><\/strong>\u2013 a Member of the European Parliament sitting with the European group Patriots for Europe \u2013 argues that Riga should seek compensation when it supports EU sanctions against Russia. Also in an interview with Politico, the MEP clarified that, whilst condemning the Russian invasion and supporting continued aid to Ukraine, <strong>\u201cthe economic cost to Latvia\u201d cannot be considered unlimited<\/strong>.
