{"id":462902,"date":"2026-08-21T16:45:57","date_gmt":"2026-08-21T14:45:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2026\/08\/21\/oms-il-belgio-nomina-hans-kluge-come-direttore-generale-dellorganizzazione\/"},"modified":"2026-08-21T17:21:46","modified_gmt":"2026-08-21T15:21:46","slug":"belgium-nominates-hans-kluge-as-who-director-general","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2026\/08\/21\/belgium-nominates-hans-kluge-as-who-director-general\/","title":{"rendered":"Belgium nominates Hans Kluge as WHO Director-General"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels \u2013 \u201cThe Government of Belgium has nominated me for the position of WHO&nbsp;(World Health Organisation, ed) Director-General,\u201d Dr&nbsp;<strong>Hans Kluge<\/strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hans_kluge\/status\/2090680299311259928?s=20\">announced<\/a>&nbsp;today (21 August) on his social media<strong>. <\/strong>\u201cI am deeply honoured by the trust and confidence <a href=\"https:\/\/www.belganewsagency.eu\/press-releases\/35645\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Belgium<\/a> has placed in me, and grateful for the opportunity to stand for this important responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Since 2020, Kluge has served as Director-General of the WHO Regional Office for Europe.<\/strong> He said that, effective today, he will be \u201con special leave from his post\u201d, in accordance with the Organisation\u2019s established procedures. The Belgian emphasised that during this period he looks forward &#8220;to engaging with Member States, partners and civil society, listening to their perspectives, and exchanging views on the future of our Organisation and global health.\u201d<strong> He also reiterated that the European Regional Office will continue its &#8220;important work will continue under the capable leadership of Dr Corinne Capuano,\u201d <\/strong>who will take his place and to whom he wished \u201cevery success\u201d. Kluge went on to reaffirm that \u201chis commitment to WHO, its Member States and the values of our Organisation will remain unwavering\u201d, expressing deep respect for the \u201coutstanding leadership\u201d of the current Director-General of the WHO,<strong> Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.<\/strong> The Ethiopian \u201chas guided WHO through some of the most challenging moments in global health&#8221; and is currently serving his second and last mandate.<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/europe\/about-us\/about-who-europe\/regional-director\/dr-kluge-biography\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kluge<\/a> joined the WHO in 1999 as head of the tuberculosis project at the WHO Country Office in the Russian Federation<\/strong>. In 2009, he was transferred to the WHO Regional Office for Europe, where he served as Regional Director from 2020 to 2025, leading the office through several&nbsp;unprecedented health crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<div class=\"n6owBd awi2gc\"><span class=\"iNqyIf\">The World Health Assembly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/about\/governance\/election-of-the-who-director-general\/documents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">elects<\/a> the WHO Director-General on the recommendation of the Executive Board, both of which are organs of the Organisation. The term in office lasts five years and is renewable only once. Initially, WHO Member States propose the names of candidates, who will present their ideas to the Organisation\u2019s Member States during a public forum. Subsequently, the Executive Board \u2013 comprising technical experts \u2013 will assess their profiles and carry out two rounds of selection.
