To mark Ukraine’s Independence Day today (24 August), the European Commission has approved the allocation of 6.1 billion euros to Kyiv to purchase military equipment. The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stated that the funding will cover “the air and missile defence systems, missiles, ammunition and radars that Ukraine urgently needs.”

Today’s contribution is part of the 90 billion loan guaranteed by the EU to Kyiv. “As Russia intensifies its attacks, we are stepping up to help Ukraine protect its people and defend its skies,” von der Leyen said. In recent weeks, Russian forces have launched a barrage of ballistic missiles at cities in Kyiv and, according to estimates from the European Commission, in July alone, there were reportedly 376 missile attacks.

The funds allocated are in addition to the 16 billion euros already provided for in the procurement plans – that is, the specific spending plans financed by the 90 billion loan. To date, 8.35 billion has already been disbursed, ensuring Ukraine “receives critical supplies on time and at the required scale.” In a press release, the Commission also clarified that the majority of purchases resulting from today’s allocation will involve products from companies in the EU defence sector. The Commission also emphasised the need to increase supplies to the war-torn country “through destocking, reprioritising orders and ramping up production.” Consequently, Ukraine will be able to request payments by submitting signed contracts with defence industry companies.
