Coalition of the Willing steps up pressure on Moscow with more air defence and military capability"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels &#8211; <b><\/b>More air defence to protect Ukrainian airspace, new measures to bolster Kyiv\u2019s military capabilities, increased pressure on Russia and a further step forward on security guarantees. This is the message emerging from the meeting of the Coalition of the Willing, <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/coalition-of-the-willing-to-hold-independence-day-meeting-in-kyiv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">today (24 August) in&nbsp;Kyiv<\/a> on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/italy.representation.ec.europa.eu\/notizie-ed-eventi\/notizie\/lue-ribadisce-la-propria-solidarieta-allucraina-occasione-del-35o-anniversario-dellindipendenza-2026-08-21_it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">35th anniversary of Ukraine\u2019s independence<\/a>. <strong>A hybrid summit, <\/strong>with some leaders present in the Ukrainian capital and others joining from their respective capitals, which comes at a particularly delicate stage of the war.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;It is <strong>&#8220;to strengthen support for Ukraine so that it can defend itself against Russian aggression&#8221;<\/strong> \u2013 this is the commitment reiterated by the Coalition leaders, who also confirmed their determination to &#8220;<strong>increase pressure on Russia<\/strong>, which continues to reject peace and to carry out attacks against civilians.&#8221; The leaders will therefore continue to coordinate measures to reduce the resources available to Moscow, \u201cin particular by combating the shadow fleet\u201d \u2013 the fleet of vessels, mainly oil tankers, used by Moscow to transport oil and other products whilst circumventing Western sanctions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The main focus of the meeting is, first and foremost, on strengthening military support for Kyiv. The British Prime Minister <strong>Andy Burnham<\/strong>, who has arrived in Kyiv for his first international visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2026\/07\/20\/burnham-new-prime-minister-uk\/\">since he moved into Downing Street<\/a>, has called on allies to supply more Patriot interceptor missiles, emphasising that Ukraine <strong>\u201cneeds more help to protect its people right now\u201d<\/strong>. \u201cWe are doing everything we can and working with allies outside the coalition to draw on our stocks and help others draw on theirs,\u201d he added.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, London is preparing further support for Ukraine\u2019s missile capabilities. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/4e3c99fe-1a8d-4fb2-b99a-da1c1da4db8e?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to the Financial Times<\/a>, the British government has authorised the European missile manufacturer MBDA to share classified information with Kyiv regarding the British components of cruise missiles. The aim is to enable Ukraine and France to work towards the local production of the SCALP, the French version of the British Storm Shadow \u2013 two systems jointly developed by Paris and London. The<strong>&nbsp;move is designed to strengthen Kyiv\u2019s ability to strike deep into Russian territory.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The British decision provoked a strong reaction from Moscow, which recalled its ambassador to London, claiming that relations between the two countries had plummeted <strong>\u201cto an unprecedented low.\u201d<\/strong> The British Foreign Office responded by stressing that the appointment of the new Russian ambassador is a matter for Moscow to decide, and pointing out that London maintains an embassy in Moscow \u201cto engage in dialogue with the Kremlin and to represent its positions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;On the political front, Emmanuel Macron warned that Moscow could step up the pressure on European countries. <strong>\u201cRussia will escalate tensions with European countries to dissuade them from providing assistance to Ukraine,\u201d<\/strong> said the French president, referring to possible new provocations against NATO countries. \u201cWe must press ahead with what we have begun to do within NATO to ensure a resolute stance,\u201d he added.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;A free people does not subdued,&#8221;<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/EmmanuelMacron\/status\/2091842930575118781?s=20\">the French president said on X<\/a>. \u201cOn this Ukraine Independence Day, France salutes a people who defend their freedom, their sovereignty, their future.\u201d He added: \u201cUkraine stands tall. France, Europe, and all the partners of the Volunteer Coalition, by its side.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>German Chancellor <strong>Friedrich Merz<\/strong> also reaffirmed his support for Kyiv, paying tribute to the courage of the Ukrainian people who <strong>\u201cfor years have been defending their country\u2019s independence with remarkable courage against Russia\u2019s brutal war of aggression.\u201d<\/strong> \u201cToday, on this important day, it is particularly true: we stand firmly by Ukraine\u2019s side,\u201d he said. Spain, represented via video link by Foreign Minister Jos\u00e9 Manuel Albares, also confirmed its support for Kyiv \u201cin achieving a just and lasting peace.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>From Italy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.governo.it\/it\/articolo\/riunione-videoconferenza-della-coalizione-dei-volenterosi\/32506\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, in a video link, reiterated<\/a> <strong>&#8220;Italy\u2019s unwavering support for Ukraine\u2019s sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence.&#8221;<\/strong> The Prime Minister also expressed \u201cdeep sympathy for the suffering caused by the ongoing Russian attacks on civilian infrastructure,\u201d and confirmed Italy\u2019s commitment to humanitarian aid, with the dispatch of further generators ahead of winter.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;Rome also supports tightening the sanctions regime against Moscow. During the summit, Meloni stressed the need to <strong>\u201cstrengthen the effectiveness of the sanctions regime and counter any attempts to circumvent it,\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong>with the aim of \u201cfurther weakening Moscow\u2019s war machine.&#8221; Italy, she concluded, will continue to work with its international partners to promote \u201ca path of negotiation towards a just and lasting peace\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Also present in Kyiv was the President of the European Council, <strong>Antonio Costa<\/strong>, who, on Independence Day, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2026\/08\/24\/costa-begins-tour-de-capitales-in-ukraine-eu-budget-central-to-talks\/\">paid tribute to the \u201ccourageous Ukrainian people\u201d<\/a> and all those who \u201c<strong>are still standing firm today, defending their homeland on the front line and across Ukraine<\/strong>.&#8221; &#8220;Your courage and bravery are a source of inspiration for the world,\u201d he wrote on X. <\/p>\n<p>Security guarantees for the post-war period now remain on the table.
